My brother let me borrow his copy of Oblivion (didn't even know he had it...)

so to get to the point.

what mods do you wonderful gents recommend to improve oblivion, as I understand there were some flaws with the game. (like the big brother guards.)

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul definately that I know of. OOO fixes the whole balanced leveling thing many people had an issue with and also adds tons of additional texture skins, weapons, armours, etc., so definately get OOO.

Also, yeah the whole big brother guard thing coming to your rescue can be irritating. There's probably a mod to reduce the frequency of guards patrolling the highways out there somewhere too though. I don't know of any, but there's an ass load of mods for Oblivion, just google it. :)

The mods listed at the bottom here are pretty much essential. I really don't see how people ever played without that distant LOD fix. Eugh.

All the Unique Landscapes mods are pretty cool if you're looking for something new. Can cause severe conflicts though so be careful. Use Oblivion Mod Manager to help reduce such problems.

Others I consider essential are Illumination Within, Realistic Flora, More Immersive Sound, Low-Poly Grass (if you need more FPS) and Short Grass if you don't like the default long grass the game uses. Natural Environments is also worth a look, though I don't like all the features.

I heard the latest official patch comes with a fix for the LOD textures though? Wasn't it that "peppered" landscape look or something? TBH, I tried to install one of those third party LOD mods one time, and I couldn't spot the difference with or without. Then again, I've never seen the game in it's unpatched form either, so I don't know what the improved distant LOD textures even looks like. :|

Gamespot did a comparison. When I first bought Oblivion, I was pretty disappointed with the much-hyped graphics until I used the LOD fix.
Do you remember that one famous screenshot of the fighter character on a horse holding a steel longsword? I think it's on the box of the retail version. Anyways, I remember the Skyrim region mountains in the background looking pretty good in fact with the snowy look and all. They don't necessarily look terrible in my game, but it looks nothing like the ones in that screenshot tbh. I didn't bother with the LOD mods for fear of FPS loss though. Plus, according to tweakguides, the latest patch is supposed to have a superior LOD fix to the third party LOD mods anyways IIRC.

I used to use oldblivion to be able to play it on my ati 9250 PCI card. ah the good old days. had to reduce the view distance to something like my hand in front of my face.

so I got an X1900GT and it still doesn't play well, except inside caves and stuff.

maybe next time.

ATI cards are notoriously slacking in the performance department compared to Nvidia cards.
Personally, I just can't play any game with butchered graphical settings in favor of perfomance. Drives me nuts and I don't know how some of you can do it. :P (i.e. some people try to play Crysis on extremely low resolutions and the lowest texture settings) In this case however, Oblivion's main source of FPS drainage is draw distance. I use the no-tile grass mod and set the iMinGrassSize=125, which is a superior method to the in-game grass distance slider.

I can run Oblivion at almost full settings except for soft shadows, # of shadows, and shadows on grass, and get around 18-25 FPS outdoors, and 55-60 FPS indoors. Except for indoor places that have alot of clutter objects of course.

Lol I got very briefly sucked back into Oblivion for about a week, but even with all the mods, it couldn't disguise how horrible the main quest was... T___T

Also after wandering around for a while everything started to seem incredibly pointless, so I gave up and uninstalled it.

This is not another /facepalm @ Oblivion thread though Jintor. :P

The only thing that irritates me about Oblivion though is that I paid $50 for the GoTY edition and still have to do quite a bit of work to get the game to work right. On this note, my main problems with Oblivion were purely the technical aspects, not necessarily the gameplay itself, which can be fixed with mods.

There's this one mod (I forgot the name) but it's a combat mod that lets you chop off heads and smash skulls and has tons of new combat moves.
