Recommended tweaks for a HL2 virgin

Hey there!

When I get home from work today my copy of HL2 should be sitting on the doormat for me.

I bought a new computer this year (9600XT, 3.0Ghz P4, 1GB RAM) and am getting back into playing PC games. I'm 'reasonably' computer literate but not specifically for games.

When I got Doom 3 I was advised to include a lot of config file tweaks, which did help to improve the performance on my computer.

I've been looking around for some equivalent recommendations for HL2, and although I've seen loads, I'm not really sure which ones would benefit me and which are just used to resolve specific problems that people have. I'm only really looking for general tweaks that would benefit 'most people' as I don't want to spend hours and hours fine-tuning stuff (I would like to just forget about it after a while and get on with the game!).

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or should I just leave it well alone?

Cheers for your help!

If it isn't broken, don't fix it. You PC should run it fine with the default settings. Just change them in the in game options if you prefer eye candy over performance or the other way round.

Valve did a lot more to make sure HL2 ran on slower computers out of the box then iD did.

Read: ID doesn't give a crap about the consumer, Valve does.

Half-life 2 supports more system configurations than any other game ever. Doom 3 ran bad on the best of systems compared to other games.
