Reducing Ping

I have searched every hl2dm forum i could find, and they all say pretty much the same thing.

what i have done:

cl_smooth 1
rate 20000
cl_updaterate 20
cl_cmdrate 30
-heapsize 512000
lowering the priority

i even did a registry edit (DWORD value:GlobalMaxTCPWindowSize 20000 hexidecimal)

and i still lag at 800+ ping.
ive reduced the graphics and sound to their lowest possible settings, uninstalled hl2dm and re-installed it, and played on servers with both higher and lower ping than myself. I'm completly stumped. i dont really like posting the same problem that others have had, but this is my last resort.

Here's my PC specs:

Uhhhh......

How about your connection speed?

Having better video performance and getting a higher FPS isn't really gonna help your ping. I don't see how it could.

i dl at about 266kbps and ul at 77kbps.i dont need a higher fps. thats not my issue. my ping spikes to over 800. i just gave all my pc info so getting help with my problem will be easier.

I have no idea what could be wrong. I'm assuming with rates like that that you have cable or something. The only thing I can think of is that even though your connection speed and file transfers might be going fast, that something in your connection is....i dunno causing lost packets or something. I don't think I know enough to tell you what to do. Sorry.

What connection TYPE do you have?

Sorry, its a cable modem. I was up really late last night and real groggy lol.

Maybe this will help. When I re-installed steam, it set my internet connection speed to 28.8. It took me like a week to figure out that when I set the internet connection speed in Steam -> Settings -> Internet to "Lan/T1/ > 1M", that it fixed my high ping problem. Check and see if thats what your problem is. Hope this helps. :D

Cable isn't really known for having good pings.

Few questions on this:

- Does it happen everywhere, or just to one particular server?
- Have you tried typing "tracert [server ip address you want to reach]" in a DOS prompt to see if you have router issues? (ie. C:\ tracert 127.0.0.1 ) Post the results in here if you don't understand how to read them.

A few suggestions:
- Make sure Steam is the only app running when the game launches. Close browsers, e-mail, etc.
- Download and run Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Spyware and junk could be downloading while you're playing.
- Do a complete virus scan with up to date virus definition files. If you don't want to pay for a virus scanner then get a free one like Avast.
- Try to reduce the number of icons you have in your system tray. Everyone and their sister thinks their program is SOOO important that they need to launch on started - yet they end up consuming resources for no reason.

Good luck.

This happens everywhere, even on U.S.East servers, and the router is a-ok.
