I usually don't post on these forums, but I've been reading them daily for several months now. Something has to be said, read on:

Flaming, Bashing and Trolling

Hate posts and personal attacks will not be tolerated on the Halflife2.net forums. Treat others on these message forums as you would expect them to treat you. Posting topics specifically designed to provoke a negative response from someone is also asked to be avoided.

This is a strange complaint, so forgive me if I word this wrong. Half of the posts in this forum seem to be similar or equivilant to the two posts quoted above.

Yes, it can be annoying when someone posts old information, but, is it really that painful to use your back button? If it is old information, just move along. There is really no need to be so hostile to an innocent forum browser, an avid Half-life fan, merely relaying information that he/she thought was interesting and/or important.

Again, yes, there is a "search" button. Folks, this forum is monstrous in size. There are 633 pages of 25 threads with a rough average of 25 replies a piece. I just ran a test search for "system specs" and the results turned up three pages. If it was my intention to post a new thread with (potentially) new information, I would just post it. I don't have the patience or time to browse nearly one-hundred threads looking for the post that references my information.

My request is simple. Please, fellow Half-life fans and forum readers, before replying maliciously in response to old information, or redundant news, either press your back button and resume browsing the forums, or politely inform the thread starter that this may be existing news to the majority of readers. Even so, with the post count so high, it is very easy to miss threads.

Stop being so harsh on these people. They don't deserve it. If this had happened to me and I was new to the forums, I may feel reluctant to post new information in the future. Or, I might post it on another site's forums.

Note: Please forgive the double post, it is my intention for moderators and new forum users to view this thread as a new topic, while being simultaneously being posted in the thread that inspired it.

I only check the forums every few days and I don't comb every page reading every post. It helps when someone posts old info because the chances are it is probably new info for me.

boooooooring... :bounce: :frog: :imu: :rolling: :naughty:

This is in the wrong forum. Seriously, it should be in the Off Topic.

A lot of people come here for Half Life 2 information and I don't know about anyone else but I don't want to see 10 threads on the first page saying "OMG HALF LFIE 2 DELATYED!!!11!!" or whatever.

It may be elitest but have you seen some forums without Mods that do anything or people who prefer to have a clean forum?

This was in response to this thread. I posted the same (see Note at bottom of post) in General Discussion because it is there that this is taking place.

I don't see your logic, Feath, but if the moderators agree that this should be off-topic, so be it.

There is a sticky regarding Delay Threads here due to the high volume of useless and/or redundant information. These are not the posts I'm referring to.

Well said NBK!

Too many jearks here that run around spamming pointless replies and false info then when someone tries to talk about something they feel is intresting or important they get flammed.

It is to the point I almost dont like to read this forum any longer the only thing worth reading is the info from valve only sticky at the top. Everything else is full of garbage.

I dont know where people get off feeling superior because they spend more time online reading every post in a forum then a person who doesnt. They are probably friendless losers that have nothing better to do then sit at home alone, on a computer.

And there is nothing wrong with starting a new thread if the old thread is not on page 1. It continues the discussion... If you have nothing to add to it then dont reply, really very simple isnt it? It will go away if you ignore it and if people still want to talk about it then it will stay.

Nbk you have to understand part of them want to simply spam, just like those "delay threads" and it does get annoying after a while.

I did not mention any reference to a moderator-less forum. Perhaps you should re-read my post?

or people who prefer to have a clean forum

I'm just saying that without a certain degree of people being picky about the what is being picky about what is posted in the forum, it will degrade into an awful mess. (Clean was probably the wrong word to use).

I've never ever created a thread because I've never had to, all the information I needed, I've found. It's not that hard to find what you are looking for or use the correct forum.

Tonight, god willing, a new Steam Movie will be preloaded. Within 10 minutes they'd be 3 new threads saying "New Steam movie". Then throughout the day people will be posting new threads about the new steam movie. I don't want to have to trawl through that.

A LOT of people visit this forum, and it's quite surprising how well it's kept. I would like it to stay that way.

And that post was very off topic. What more do you need other than "Half Life 2 discussion only"?

Are you discussing Half Life 2?

i hate it when people make these "everybody love eachother" threads, ive seen as many of these as ive seen of "omg teh game ist delayed!111!" threads, or wait, sorry, they fit into the same grouping. stupid threads, which deserve flaming.

I do agree, this is a suprisingly well organized group of forums that are well moderated. And I agree, as well, that people should be notified if they are posting redundant or existing information. (As already mentioned.)

The point that you are seemingly missing is that someone had to post the original information you found. That may not happen if the author is weary of getting flamed for possibly posting existing information.

Then don't. If you see a post that has that title, do not click on it.

Agreed, read above.

If you really want to get technical, the forum discription is titled, Half-Life 2 related discussion only. Key word: related. The thread I created relates directly to how this community discusses Half-Life 2. By your logic, the Account problems? thread, as well as the Please read before posting thread need to be moved to the Off Topic forum.

Then we are in agreement? Oh good. I'm not condoning flaming, but people should be wary about whether something has been posted before.

Yeah, I know. But, that doesn't condone posting something again; something that's easy to find (quite often on the front page).

If people are not informed that they should check to see whether something has been posted, they won't learn.

Obviously sticky posts by the Admins do not count, those are there to inform users about certain rules and other information.

Your post was not related to Half Life 2. Only in the sense it refers to this forum. You could've easily posted this in the off topic thread.

As I said, the thread I created relates directly to how this community discusses Half-Life 2. The offenders that I'm quoting and referencing (others that repeatedly bash uninformed thread authors) are specific to this discussion forum. In other words, it would really defeat the purpose to post this in the Off-Topic forum. The target audience (readers and authors in the General Discussion forum) would be unknowing of this thread's existence.

Aside: It's nice to know that an intelligent debate/discussion is still possible here. Who knows, maybe I'll start posting. Thanks for the diplomacy, Feath. :D

When no news is being released it is INEVITIBLE that posts will become redundent.

It's ppl like you that make us flame you n00bs.
/me hands cookie for making a useless thread and dies.

I also do not want to defend flaming: which is why I try to be polite about telling people to think or search before they post. A lot of the people that do this are new to the boards and just don't know what is what. But if they aren't reminded, at least gently, then they end up wasting a lot of people's time with pointless and redundant threads. The rule of thumb is to ASSUME that someone has ALREADY started a thread on the topic, rather than assume that out of the hundreds of people here, you are the only one who checked shacknews and saw some tidbit of info. That's pretty egotistical if you think about it.

May I say first and foremost your logic is faulty to begin with you nutsack, nor am I flaming you then expressing my opinion without the intent to anger you but to correct you because you are wrong. Those are not hate posts, they are a shutup post stop wasting my time post, they are not personal attacks, if I was ignorant and wasted others time HELL YES I would want to be treated like that, tell me to f'ing shutup if i'm doing something gay like reposting something thats already been posted. also they are not designed to provoke a negative response then to get them to shutup, so like your a moron and they allow these kind of posts cause apparantly your not a ****ing admin and you can quite plainly see the admins know more about their damn rules then you and that is why we still post them! Jeesus you nut.

Yes, I respect other ppl's thots but this thread isn't about that.
It' about the flaming and stuff.

I am a relatively(relatif!!) old guy as a gamer with lots of experiences in life and with human interaction... i say it's human nature!..especially from the younger ones and you can not always blame them..they'll learn as they progress in life (hopefully)..we are on the WORLD WIDE web and it's for everyone and every age..so there it is ;)

HL2 is also popular so that's why there are so many posts..i'm already afraid how this forums will become when it's released(first days calm i know that for sure!! but afterwords..oooh)

Don't know why i'm know even wasting my time on a reply like this..find out yourself and try to act with a little respect for other people
