Reference images pixelating

I don't know what is going on but if I create a plane in 3ds max 6 and put a bitmap there, the bitmap is pixelated and messy no matter how small the plane is (i usually create it to match the size of the image) or how far I watch it from. When I render it, it looks normal. It's really hard to model cause all the lines are so messy. In all modeling videos that I've checked and followed, the reference images don't seem to pixelate near as bad as mine. I've tried all software, directx and opengl modes but it doesn't help. Any tips?

menu customize-> preference->viewport -> in the display driver section:configure driver -> set download size to 512

I've noticed this problem. I think, in my case, the video card is too old... I have GeForce 2 GTS (old skool hard-core :P).
Does anyone know of a workaround to force textures to a higher res? Also, what size textures are supported on higher end cards, say.. a radeon 9800 Pro??

No, it's not the fault of anyone's card... it's max's fault

things to try:
-Change viewport renderer to directx instead of ogl
-Under Preferences, in the viewport section, check "best match image"
-Get a higher res photo

did you set the correct size for the bitmap, the same as the picture I mean? lol becuase it happens to me if I dont :)

yes I did try setting sizes in the viewport pref. screen.

thanks guys. I'll try those things once I get home.

use opengl driver because its faster (so they say :p)
i had the same problem en did this:
Customize -> Preferences -> Viewports -> Configure Driver (below)
then set:
Background Texture Size to 1024
Match bitmap as close ON
Download Texture Size to 512
Match bitmap as close ON
Texel Lookup to LINEAR
MipMap Lookup to LINEAR

i think it was the last 2 settings that did the trick but i didn't bother testing one at a time
so put them all like that

ogl may be faster, but directX allows for better background images.

Thanks guys, problem solved! So the solution was to set the download texture size to 512. I'm using OGL because 2 sided options don't work in d3d mode for some reason. But it's a lot better now, thanks!
