Sigh...it used to be so easy on my 486.

Why the hell cant i reformat?

Im running XP prof.

Try to do format c: in dos i get: The volume is locked. Would you like to unlock, sure why not, then it says volume still in use cannot format.

Fine no biggie, I have boot disks for windows 2000. I restart and start up 2000. I go to setup 2000, it says no harddisks can be found on my comp or whatever.

Someone answer me this: I have xp professional, i want to reformat and go to 2000. HOW THE HELL DO I DO IT?!!?

You have to boot from your WinXP CD. You'll have the option to reformat when you re-install WinXP.

EDIT: On another note, you have that much computer and you don't know how to reformat? For shame....

I know how to reformat, I dont have the windows xp cd though. That's y i want to know if theres an alternative.

boot from a 9x floppy.

run fdisk/format from there.

i dont have a 9x floppy.

my only materials i have to format with are the windows 2k boot disks, and the windows 2000 cd rom.

Well.. since you don't have a WinXP CD then I'm assuming you won't be re-installing WinXP...

If you've got a Win2k CD, then do what I said in my first post with that then...

Like I said in my first post... you have that much computer and you don't know how to reformat? For shame....

Yes i have ...that much computer....which isnt a sentence...but anyway....I boot from my 2000 cd and it says setup cannot find any harddisks attached or whatever.

It can't see your SATA drive. Need your SATA floppy disk. ;)
Remember, F6 will select to load the drivers from the floppy.

Why don't you have a Windows XP CD?

confused.....i dont have a sata floppy anymore....uh....what should i do.

You need to find the drivers for your SATA controller and put them on a floppy then.

Ive got the raptor 74 gig hd. i have no idea what SATA controller i have.....

you need your SATA floopy disk and a Windows XP cd. when you boot from the cd, you press F6 when it says to install SATA drivers or something like that, then you insert your floppy when it asks you to, then follow on-screen instructions to format, you really need the floppy and the boot cd tho you shouldn't lose it like that...

If you've got the manual for your motherboard, it'll probably tell you there. Or even just look up the specs for your motherboard on the web. Which one do you have btw?
