Lou Cannon and Colin Powell believed the film inspired Ronald Reagan to discuss uniting against an alien invasion when meeting Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985. Two years later, Reagan told the UN "I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world."

that's kinda awesome...but i'm confused, wasn't Regan a die hard Christian? it's obvious i don't know shit about him, but this just earned him 1 "cool point" from me.

I dont see why every one thinks that alien life would have to be technologically advanced. I mean , they could have flintlock rifles for all we know (assuming there is other life out there) and power space craft using cheese.

What does being a christian have to do with warning the world of something that could happen that would require all the world's nations to unite?

I'll give you a clue to what we really need to unite against.
spoiler: it's global warming.

well maybe because until recently Christianity didn't acknowledge alien beings.

Because an alien species that could in some form contact us would have to at least have developed and perfected radio communication, and even then by the time we detected them they would have developed for several decades more, depending on how far away they are. Less technologically advanced life is certainly as plausible as high-tech aliens, but they won't be discovered by us until we actually travel to those planets and get close enough to actually see their cities or villages or what have you, and at that point we will be close enough to blow them to dust for being so technologically inferior so it's a moot point.

"You will bow down to the might of the Terran Empire or you shall cease to exist!"

Sorry I don't worship Futurama.
What episode is it from?

If we ever have to worry about an alien threat, we're already doomed, because they'd have to be seriously far ahead of us technologically to be able to make it here to invade us.

Well, the whole 'succumbing to illness' idea seems plausible enough to me, but if an alien life form was intelligent enough to find their way here and launch an invasion, they'd probably be able to account for such possibilities.

At the other end of the scale was Signs, in which the aliens turned out to be allergic to water. 70% of the planet is covered in it and the damn stuff falls from the sky on a regular basis, and an alien race that's allergic to it somehow fails to notice this before launching their invasion?

Fail.
