My roommate is having a problem with his computer. All of a sudden since yesterday, when he turns on his computer, he gets an error saying there's a problem with his registry and windows has loaded an alternate or a back-up. Windows does load, but it appears to be in safe mode, it gives a lot of various errors (the errors change each start-up it seems), and the computer runs excruciatingly slow. Is there anything I can do for this, or is reformatting the only way out?

Virus...System registry hook virus.

Get anti virus software and scan system or reinstall OS.

Good Luck.

try doing chkdisk.

to do that go to my computer and right click on your main drive (its usually C: if you have one harddrive)
go to properties then click the tools tab your will see three buttons. click the button in error checking. a box will pop up,check off both check boxes and click start. it will do a quick scan then it might ask you to restart. do so if it does. in the start up process it will come up with the chkdisk scanning. dont press escape, just let it scan and fix errors.

Note: this only will fix corrupted files in windows but it could improve the problem your friend is having.
