I have this project in math where I have to relate different 5 ideas that has something to do with our freshman benchmark project to math and make a model for each idea. Me and my group are planting trees to prevent air and noise pollution. So far, I have four ideas.

Linear relationship:
Rate of noise pollution since 1990. (Decline?)

Another linear relationship:
Rate of air pollution since 1990. (Decline)

Bar graph:
Effectiveness of different stategies to prevent air pollution.

Another bar graph:
Effectiveness of different stategies to prevent sound pollution.

I need one more that models a quadratic relationship. Can you guys help me?

Also, here's the guidelines if you don't really understand me.

Thanks!

stupid smericans! its mathSSSSSSSS

its an abbreviation for MATHEMATICS. not mathematic.

its mathematicSSSS

its a plural... you're studying multiple aspects of this topic.

That's assuming you're taking a mathmatics course which, where I live, don't exist. We have Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trig, Calculis, etc etc. There is no "Mathmatics course"

We have mathmatic courses.

We have math courses.

But if it is an abbreviation of a plural word wouldn't it be assumed that is is still plural?

sheesh things are really getting offtopic can people stop commenting on the abreviation and work on the problem ?

Oh, and ditto like all the rest.

Not sure, but what about the populations of trees (having been planted) over time.

i.e. the more trees there are the more saplings (?) that are produced .

Think population of rabbits per generation.

that would model a linear equation, the number would just be increasing and increasing over time. the graph would look like a line going up diagonally.

i need an equation that looks like a 'U" or a "n" on a graph. increase then decrease or decrease then increase

thanks anyways

A lame one could be change of effectiveness of air/sound pollution reduction thing fields per length. I.e., if each * is a "pollution reducer" (?), a field like

****
****
****
****
would pick up 16 units (4x4 grid),

*****
*****
*****
*****
*****

would clean up 25 units (5x5 grid), and

******
******
******
******
******
******

would clean up 36 units (6x6 grid). Ultimately, this would make a quadratic graph. It would also ultimately be pointless, but having relevance to anything doesn't seem to be a requirement :)

Of course, there would actually have to be some sort of "pollution-removal box" (EDIT: Like a tree, idiot? :( ), and I don't know if there is or not.

Haha, good luck getting any useful help on these forums :D

EDIT AGAIN: Okay, I read some more, and graphs that look like n's or u's are actually parabolic (well, they're quadratic too, but paraboloids are a specific type). That might be a little tougher, since it's kind of hard to consider much negative with regards to air pollution (negative trees? :( ) and I can't really think of much that would scoot the graph over.

Though actually, if you introduce the idea of an "anti-tree", you can make a graph of population of trees vs. rate of pollution, given a constant source of pollution. An anti-tree would follow through on its namesake and actually make pollution (though if you had both tree and anti-tree populations simultaneously, you would get some kind of sinusoidal

I stopped there because I was completely wrong and dumb, and I need to go to bed :( Best of luck.

I can't edit after 15 minutes.

Linear bunnies?
:imu: :imu:

:imu: :imu: :imu: :imu:

[insert 8 dancing imu emotes here, since the man is keeping me down and limiting how many emotes I can have in a message]

[insert 16 dancing imu emotes here, causing flooding in 3rd world countries]

[insert 32 dancing imu emotes here, causing the election of George Carlin to the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms]

IIRC, rabbit populations increase exponentially (f(g)=I^g. f(g) is how many you have, I is the initial number, and g is the generation number) without any sort of population control (e.g. predators, death of natural causes, limited resources, etc.)

EDIT: I really have to stop and think before posting for a while :( Anyway, I'll just do it with dots.

No it wouldn't.

It would look like the right hand side of a U or something like X squared.

Think about it.

You plant one tree.

That produces 2 'child' trees.

Those 2 trees then produce 2 each (making 4).

Those 4 produce another 8.

those 8 produce 16 ........

That's not a straight line!

EDIT: See post above.

Actually, according to Dictionary.com, both math and maths are synonyms:

mathematics

n : a science (or group of related sciences) dealing with the logic of quantity and shape and arrangement (syn: math, maths)

Perhaps you should apologize for the "stupid americans" comment. Or rather, if you really think we're so stupid, you should stop using our products and return HL2.

/me is so tired of the US bashing...stfu and stop using our products and services if you think we're so bad

wait, now that I think about it, the teacher never said anything about it having to be parabola. he jsut said it has to be quadratic. half a U is considered quadratic right?
