What is the SINGLE favourite song that you love to listen to when you want to relax, or chill out after a hard day's of work. Basically, I always thought relaxing music comprised of these 4 genres..

1. Downtempo - stuff like Air, Boards of Canada etc..
2. Post-Rock (some of them) - God is an astronaut etc..
3. Any Symphonies..
4. Any trance techno that is relaxing..

4. Or Basically any song that is really relaxing and helps you chill out..

Mogwai - Golden Porsche

Whenever I put on that album when I go to bed, I always fall asleep at this song.

"Blue Calx" by Aphex Twin

I can listen to it in the context of anything. It exists outside of the world, from which I - the observer - can tacitly witness life as it unfolds.

Specifically, Right Where It Belongs by Nine Inch Nails. Soothing, and Trent soft voice does wonders.

pyramid song by radiohead.

hell most of amnesiac could probably put me to sleep.

Several of my favorite songs have been mentioned already.

Specific songs that have the emotional strength to put me into a different, relaxed mood (though sometimes it's a positive one and sometimes it's sort of melancholy depending on the song):

Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy
Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Nine Inch Nails - Beside You In Time
Aphex Twin - Parallel Stripes
Aphex Twin - Avril 14th
Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
Blind Melon - No Rain

As far as bands go, I'd say Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Bluetech, Amon Tobin, the Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Phish, The Shins, The Grateful Dead, Sublime, and TV on the Radio.

Some of those are the sleepy-chillout and others are the happy-chillout feeling, I think it's relatively obvious which is which.

Air, Mogwai, some Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, Erotic Chillout Sessions (lol), some A Perfect Circle etc.

I'd also recommend the album Momentum by Steve Hackett; incredible chilled out acoustic flamenco pieces, truly beautiful.

Air, Boards of Canada, Psapp, Ulrich Schnauss and Aphex twin - Selected Ambient Works vol.1

Diamond Sea by Sonic Youth.
1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins.
Some Thom Yorke/Radiohead songs (No Surprises, Black Swan, How to Disappear Completely)
Staring at the Sun by TV on the Radio.
Anything by Joanna Newsom :D

Michael Jackson - Earth Song. Dunno why. I liked the song before I knew who it was from.

Boards of Canada, duh. Beck is pretty relaxing too.

Katcha - Touched by God

Probably the ultimate chillout tune.

Air - La Femme D'argent
Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place EP
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

Air, Boards of Canada, Psapp, Ulrich Schnauss and Aphex twin - Selected Ambient Works vol.1

You mean SAW 85-92 or whatever? I only have a few tracks off that but it's pretty good.

Explosions in the Sky - It's Natural to Be Afraid

That and every other song they've ever written. I love them. <3

Mogwai
Air
"Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" by The Flaming Lips
"Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd

The "Ambient" part can be kind of misleading at parts. Some of the tracks are pretty active in an early electro kind of way. For instance, I don't think "Green Calx" belongs on it at all since it sounds like a drill-machine with giant robot sounds mixed with acid.

But when it softens down, it's very lovely. I consider SAW2 to be very "earthy" in its sound. SAW1 is more cavernous, crystalline, and spacey. They had a few tracks play from it before the show when I saw NIN live and it gave this wondrous calm-before-the-storm feel. There are times when I think nothing in Aphex's discography can beat the likes of "Xtal" or "Tha". But of course, you pick his albums according to what you feel like listening to at the time.

any cranberries or sarah mclachlan (although not the latter for a while now).

I almost always put on No Need To Argue before I go to sleep.

This whole album by an artist called BT.

Key song would be - See you on the other side :D

Biosphere - Substrata is the ultimate barren landscape soundscape. Think of the Selected Ambient Works albums but with one altogether set theme revolving around a icy wasteland.

BT - Monster?

Agreed.

Mm. Childhood Montage, Ditch the Car, etc. Good album, surprisingly good, either you or JNightshade sent it to me a long time ago.

Antipop, that album's in my Azureus window, how odd ;)

Yes that must've been me. :) Something along the lines of musical orgasm.

thirteen senses - into the fire. a very relaxing sounding band, similar to coldplay.

When it comes to relaxing music, few are as accomplished as Stars of the Lid.
