Can anybody else see this thing happend and what I mean is they can remake Half Life with the Half Life 2 graphics,Ragdoll Physics, and etc, etc,.I think it would be preety cool if a Mod team did this or autually Valve?.What do you guys think about that???

the bsp format remains the same afaik and valves mentioned how they made porting old maps as painless as possible

It would be cool for the first 5 mins of play. (ie: the train ride) But afterwards you'd be expecting everything, and be like... oh this is boring now... forget this old school remake! Back to the online mayhem!!

In other words, it's a waste of time. And not worth the work you'd have to put into such a project. If anyone had THAT much free time to recreate 40+ maps of the original HL and convert all that content over, they might as well make a total conversion of a completly new single player mission that exceeds the original HL's singleplayer story and gameplay. This would not only be more funner, but alot easyer, and the community would support such a move alot more. We love new stuff.

Would you really replay Mario Bros. 1 if they added 16 bit color and higher quality sound to it instead of 8bit color with 8khz 8-bit sound?
Of course not!

Now.... remaking Doom III on the Source engine... hmmm...... That would be something to see. In fact, nealy any 3d game out today could be recreated perfectly or even more higher quality than the original. Imagine Metroid Prime remade for the Source engine? This reminds me of the time I made a Doom 1 map for TFC... Or that mod called Redeption that in the begining, teleports Gordon to a Quake II map breifly, and then back. That was really cool. Now that I think of it... with the Source engines new graphics capabilities... a mod team could make professional quality games very easy... some of which would probably be more advanced than the latest console games... I mean, how hard could it be to make a Halo type of mod with the Source engine?

i rekon Vavle will make H-L Revised :p whish is HL1 made in the source engine

imo that would be the coolest thing in the world! HL1 HL2 HL3 all on source too cool :D

Id rather they made some cool new stuff than remaking HL1........thats something the modding community will do.....NOT valve.

I hope that someone does it. Half Life singleplayer is still pretty damn cool. I go back and play it all the time, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who does. Seeing it enhanced with the Source engine would make it so great. It's a great game, you have to admit. The only reason why it isn't exactly that "good" is because it's engine is outdated. Add the Source engine and you've got a winner.

I'm playing Half-Life 1 right now... for the first time... (yes, I bought if four years ago just to play TFC...)

I thought I read about someone at valve saying something to the effect they "maybe" they already have ported the game over to source. Maybe I'm reading into things too much, but there was innuendo.

If a mod team did that, I wouldn't play it. I'd be like, been there done that... NEXT!

Perhaps I would look at screen shots, and a couple of video clips of it. Trust me, you'd get bored with it very fast. Then again, perhaps im being a bit presumptuous, considering my opinion is based on the fact that I played HL1 singleplayer from start to finish so many times I can practicaly recite every line from every character while they talk to me... I even played it from start to finish 100's of times in cooperative mode.
The thought of having to go through all that all over agian just for better graphics and sound is crazy for me, but I guess for someone else who only played HL singleplayer ONCE (Omg! How????) would enjoy a second run with enhanced graphics. But thats a very minor group. I still think it's a waste of any mod teams time.

HOW did you play it cooperatively through the whole single player campaign???

Theres a mod for Half-Life called Svencoop. You can play HL single player cooperativly with it.

www.svencoop.com

They are also planning on making HL2 single player into a coop mode.

(Although I have to be honest. You can enable cooperative mode with a simple command line. No need to download svencoop. mp_allowmonsters 1, then change the map to c1a0. Course that won't get you all the fancy features of Svencoop..)

well i would only play hl1 with hl2 goodies after i beat hl2 itself. I would take the time to beat hl1 on hl2 though if someoen made it.

"but I guess for someone else who only played HL singleplayer ONCE (Omg! How????)"

I played through it once, tried to play through it again but lost interest.

Valve did say that they had ported some of HL to Source, just to test their conversion tools. It's possible that they could do the whole thing in not much time at all: replacing the textures is probably the hardest part.

That would depend on how much 'some' actualy is.

You can't really say that it should be easy to convert the rest, if we don't know if that some meant only 1 room with a headcrab and scientist. Heh, ok..ok...I'll stop.
They probably only did a couple peices from various key maps that featured things that held the most interest to upgrade. And considering how much needed upgrading....... but who knows how much some means. Guess someone will have to email Gabe about that one. :/

Time for bed. ZzzZzz...

I e-mailed valve a while ago and asked if the original HL games would ever be re-made in source, and I got a reply saying "hmm... that sounds like a good idea".

Very vague, but they could have said "we have no plans for this at this time", or "right now we're concentrating on HL2", so it looks promising :)

Also, I think some of you are underestimating how cool HL would be in source - it wouldn't be the same game with better graphics at all.. it would be a whole new experience. Much improved AI, incredible physics, beautiful sound and graphics.. it would be incredible. The ragdoll physics alone would bring the game to a whole new level of coolness, but that's not a fraction of what the physics engine can do.

well, for something like this you would probably want to remake all the artwork, make it all high poly with the high res textures and bump mapping and normal mapping, then you'd want to change the lighting around with thedynamic lighting they got with source, then you'd probably want to remake the sound too, HL1 has some crappy voice quality.

if they do remake HL1 in source, there's no way they're going to re-record the speech. That would be rediculous. They'll either use the speech they had in HL1, which isn't bad (adding the lip synching), or (very likely) they still have higher quality recordings of all the speech. I'm guessing the quality of a lot of the audio was reduced for the sake of file size. They didn't use mp3 compression back then.

Even with the Source engine backing it up 90% of original HL would look utterly crap today... They would have to remake everything, models, levels, textures, sound, everything. And that is a completely new game, even if its exactly like an old game :)

The basic architecture of all of the maps could be kept, and fleshed out with more details. This could be done quite easily. Also, considering a fair few creatures from HL1 will probably be in HL2, they will most likely have re-created many of HL's models anyway.

I'm really hoping we do get HL1 in source. I think you'd be surprised how good it could turn out.

I thought they have said numerous times that it would be something that the modding community could do.

"hmm... that sounds like a good idea".

I think they are saying it would be a good idea for a mod.

id probly rather keep the USP and mp7 and other hl2 weapons if there was a remake.

i hope its remade as well... just keep the same models, but ad in detail textures to everything. That'd be great to pick up boxes and through them at grunts :)
