I'm working on a project to convert all my music into digital. I've ripped about 500 CDs, my 45s, half my 12"s and more than half of my LPs. When I'm done I'll have about 65Gb of MP3s (just passed 55Gb now).
What I want to do is have removeable HDDs that contains a mirror of my music collection, plus any other data I want protected. I'll have two drives to rotate as mirrors (plus the original, fixed in the PC). I'll break the mirror, put in the 2nd drive and store the mirror at a friends place. Occasionally I'll break the mirror again and swap drives at my friend's house. This way I'll never loose more than a month or two. (I have 13 years of work on my PC besides music).
I've been looking around for a good solution. I already have a inexpensive piece of software that will sync files on a scheduled basis, so I could use any hardware to implement the mirror. A RAID 0 of course would be very nice. I also have a spare ATA/133 controller with Raid 0. I'd like to implement as cheaply as possible.
Here's the problem...making it removeable. IDE drives are cheap, but the only soltuions I found to make them removable where seriously overpriced. I'm also out of external drive bays except for one half-height (floppy/zip) bay. I hate the idea of buying a new case jsut for this. There isn't any way to have an external IDE drive? (actually on IDE! like external scsi--not usb/firewire) Otherwise I'm thinking some kind of external USB 2.0 drive--but I'd prefer one that I coudl exchange drives rather buying TWO external USB drive setups.
