I installed linux a while ago just to mess around with it and now I want to format and install XP. My problem is that I forgot my fedora passphrase and Linux won't reckgonize the CD.

How do I get XP back?

Restart your computer with the XP CD in your CD-ROM and boot from the CD. If it's not working, check your boot options in your BIOS setup menu.

this. if when your PC boots up it says 'press F2 to enter boot selection' or something like that, click that if not go into bios

no, that doesn't work with linux. It overrides the order and boots right into linux...

I use Linux as my primary OS. I think I know what I'm talking about. Your BIOS determines what the boot order is. You obviously don't have it set to boot from the CD before the HD.

i'm telling you, i've changed the boot order and it does nothing. I currently have the latest fedora so maybe that's why mine is different atomicspark

Be sure you're saving your BIOS settings before exiting.

i'm definitely saving the settings...it just loads linux and I have no idea how to get my cd to boot.

try to guess your passphrase...
it wont take very long

Is your XP disk okay? If the BIOS is set to look at the CD first, and the disk doesn't cut the mustard, the BIOS won't screw around and tell you - it'll skip to the next item in your boot list and look there (which would presumably be your hard drive).

So just set your BIOS to *only* load from the CD, set the others to "None".

Also, Windows CDs require you to "Press any key to boot from CD....". So yeah, hammer that shit!

Still can't remove linux...

Booting fron an XP cd DOES NOT WORK.

I don't have the fedora 9 disk I used to install it. All I want is to put XP back on this god damn laptop and every single webpage I look at just doesn't apply. What the hell do I do shy of throwing my laptop against a wall?

Try kicking it before resorting to wall smashing.

That's strange. when i got rid of Fedora i put in my Vista disk and formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows. What happens when you boot from your XP CD?

it just freezes after it says to press any button....it's not the cd, it's just XP compatibility issues

i dont know what to do, i guess ill buy a new ****ing lap top

That's wird that it freezes. You mean it says "press any key to boot from CD" and when you do it freezes? Are you using the ISO I sent you? Maybe there is something in fact wrong with the cd. There is no way to uninstall linux. The only way to do that is to boot the windows installation and start from scratch.

right now im trying gparted to remove the partitions....

no limit: your cd works fine, i even found another which did the same thing. Thanks again for that btw.

No problem. I would probably start looking at the hardware, you might have an issue there somewhere. I have never seen the windows installer crash like that, I doubt removing the partitions will do anything for you. You can disconnect the hard drive if you want and see if the cd will load then, my guess is you will have the same problem.
