Are there any really good free rendering programs?

I see some your guy's renders and they look damn good.

depends on the quality you want, the free render apps have little in the way of decent features and are usually just the basic ray tracing

If you fancy a bit of hard work, try dig up BMRT if its still about. That uses the same "rules" as Pixar's Renderman, only free (I think its still free) You'll also need to find software to convert your models to .rib format. And its mostly command line and programming, little in the way of GUI's so not really for the faint hearted. And texturing and stuff you pretty much have to write your own shaders (different kind of shaders than DX9 ones, just uses the same name) though there are a lot out there available. But most stuff its expected people to do their own, only simplified way of doing that, that I've seen is AIR, which has a GUI shader building program with it for the rib format

There's probably some others out there, shareware stuff, but I don't know about that stuff

mi braen herts...

Oh you've already got one that can render then?

3D Studio 4? nowt wrong with the renderer in that, Or do you mean Max? that has a good renderer too.. Problem is people expect great images by pressing a button, even Global Illumination isn't a "make things look cool" button. Though it is being misused a lot lately, like lens flares were shortly after Babylon 5 used them on everything.

If you've already got a proper app with a renderer in it. Then read up some tutorials and papers on lighting effects.. My favorite is digital Lighting & Rendering by Jeremy Birn, published by New Riders ISBN: 1-56205-954-0 Has a lot of good information in it about how to use lighting correctly. Really good read

Yeah, I have 3ds Max 3.1. I'll look around for different render tuts.

brazil is no longer free. and since we don't talk about warez in these forums it's of no use to him. do a search fo a post by Grey regarding a free rendering utility. it's awesome though i can't for the life of me remeber what it's called. search forum or PM Grey.

Wow ok, I know its no longer free.

and I never once mentioned warez in my post.

Sorry, i know you didn't and i didn't mean to offend you. that comment was a general statement to anyone posting later not to mention warez. Again I apoligize profusely for the miconseption.

You can still find the Brazil PUBLIC BETA version, which is free and not warez.... look for it.
