Replacing proccesor and motherboard

Okay so i want to replace my 2.0 ghz with a 3.0 ghz xeon is it a good idea? And will it fit my old case and will my old ram fit also?
 
Lavrik, I'm afraid you're going to need to give us more details..

What processor do you have currently, what's your motherboard make and model, what kind of RAM do you have..
 
You cant just buy a 3ghz xeon and put it into your current mobo. It uses diff pin sizes. Xeon CPUs are for server use. You dont just want it for performance.
 
So what should i buy? I just want a newer proccesor.
Motherboard is Intel 82845G
The graphic card is Radeon 9800 pro
im sure i have double 256 Ram sticks DDR PC2100
The proccesor is Intel 2.0 ghz

That can't be your motherboard, Intel doesn't make motherboards.. not to mention the Intel 82845G is an onboard graphics controller
 
ok you cannot put a xeon processor in that motherboard, and why are you getting a xeon anyway, unless youre making a server. xeons arent very good for gaming, unless you get 2 of them and thats very expensive.

Ah, okay, well, I wasn't too sure if intel did or didn't make mobos, so I just assumed :)

Anyhow, either way, what he listed wasn't a mobo.. I don't see how he can mistake 845G for 82845G
 
I was pretty sure they just made the chipsets... meh, my bad...

here we go... you need to awnser a few basic questions for us to help you.



#1 what are you looking to spend?(in total)


#2 you will have to buy new ram along with a cpu and mobo. as well as a new cpu fan....and a new power supply. Do you have the skills to set all this up?(its not hard)

#3 is your computer a pre-built machine? (like a dell) you might need a new case... plus a few case fans...

...basically you cannot just slip in an new mobo and cpu...you might have to build a whole new computer.
 
well case is no problem and i know how to do all that stuff i dont think it will be a problem my price range is 400-700.yea mine is a prebuilt such a idiot i am i put in the radeon 9800 pro though.
 
I don't really see why you want to upgrade at the moment. A 2GHz with a Radeon 9800 pro is fine for the time being.

I do agree with Meteor, though, you could benefit from faster RAM.
 
Alright can you tell me the RAM i should get ((so it fits my Mother board)) yea i know where ram goes and how to set it up.
 
Hate to say it, but, looking over your motherboard.. it looks as though the RAM you have is as fast as you're going to be able to buy for your motherboard.

Right. But, chances are you'll have to reformat your operating system (assuming you're running XP) if you bought a new motherboard and installed it.
 
Reformat your OS? Eh?

Last time I changed my mobo it was just a matter of uninstalling all the related drivers, swapping boards and letting those balloons stop popping up before I installed the new drivers.

Most people can't do that.. I wasn't able to the two times I swapped mobos and I've searched around looking for success stories. 99% of people have to reformat

Anyhow, you didn't do a repair install, did you? Because I'm quite aware of the fact that that works

It's not recommended to do it that way. Your PC will be much more stable if you format and reinstall your OS after a motherboard upgrade.
 
It may be a little iffy, but in my experience XP can be quite robust if you thoroughly remove all the old drivers and then boot up into safe mode to install the new ones. (of course when I say remove I mean uninstall the device and the driver files themselves so XP can't try to reinstall the hardware on reboot)

The only thing to worry about is any necessary RAID/ATA controller drivers etc.

As with most other things, XP can be quite accomodating if you're nice with it.
 
Thats not much problem to me ill just save all my personel files on a disc and then spend a few hours reformating it nothing to serios

I know it's not, I was just saying I was aware of the method. I've never tried it, as my brother did, and his computer was horribly buggy afterwards

In that case, you're obviously going to want to get a better motherboard that allows for a faster processor, as well. What's your budget?

What're you looking at upgrading now, CPU, motherboard and RAM?

If you're going to want to get a new motherboard, you'll want to make sure your case is ATX, otherwise you'll have to buy a new case

Also, more than likely (although I can't say for sure), with all those upgrades will come a new power supply. What's your current PSU?

250 or 300 but im planning on buying new power supply can anyone recomend me a case? Cuse i dont think it is the one you mentioned.
 
Check www.pricewatch.com and search for ATX Cases, there are alot of them. Most are just as funcational as the last, it's pretty much about the style and price range for them

Although I'm aware most people don't suggest it, I've always gotten cases that either include power supplies, or dirt cheap 450/500watt PSUs and I've never had a problem with them.

Anyhow, hope this much helps, post back here if you still need help, obviously :)

you reeeeaaaaly need to be more specific and do some research if you expect people to help you.


are you interested in an AMD or INTEL based system........?

if its primarily for 3d stuff and content creation i would go intel........if its for a little of that and everything else AMD will work.

for example

AMD system basics might be:

2500+ 85$
nforce2 mobo 70-150$
1024 megs pc3200 ram $160+


you will have to install the ram yourself like everything else....it is not hard to do.


this is the last time i will try to help...im tired of repeating myself.


If you are that unsure of what you need and what you need to do with it....you are better off flopping down a few hundred extra on a DELL or something.
 
Im planning on sticking with intel thanks.But im gonna game a bit on this comp though i dont see whats problem if i get a AMD or a Intel except that i spend less money if i get a intel and isnt most pressure on the video card in the game?

for a CPU id say a 2.4c will be good..... a 2.8c or a 3.0c are your other options. a 3.2c is still a bit pricey.

2.4c - 166$
2.8c - 210$
3.0c - 265$


for ram i would go with

Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3500C2 with Platinum Silver Heat Spreader

stay away from anything faster than pc3500 as it will have slow latency's
