Requesting information about MID player software

I recently came across some old .mid files. They sound kinda disappointing with the Windows XP's default Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, so I would like to know if there are better, free wavetables for use with Windows XP. Or even some independent software with such capabilites. Can someone point me to the right direction?
