Required update for Steam installers?

I just reinstalled Half-Life, and was wondering if I need to upgrade my Half-Life client before using the Steam cache installers. Will Steam automatically update it to the correct version, or do I need to update it via the clien update first?

If you used the Steam Cache installers you didn't need to install Half-Life at all.

But don't download any updates, Steam will do the patches for you.

all you really need to do is install steam, plug in your CD key (if HL isnt allready installed) and let Steam do the rest
