resolution change from desktop??

Hi there, I have recently purchased a 32" LCD but the resolution i was using on my old monitor isnt compatible with my new monitor.
how do i change the resolution from the desktop??
i have tryed looking for the config file but i cant find it....
any help would be appreciated.

I suppose you could force a resolution using -v and -h or something along those lines, too

thnx for the reply, but where exactly do i enter the parameters?? what file?? when i run HL2 my monitor says mode not supported, so i cant see what im modifying when i have HL2 running..
