ive always played games on 1024 768 on my old tnt 2 32mb 256mb ram 900mhz processor windows 98 because it gave good graphics with good performance on games even when i could go higher in resolution i didnt because i thought 1024 768 was fine. Now i have an fx5900 ultra 3 ghz pentium 4 and a gig of ram running windows xp so what resolution should i run a large range of games on for good performance and good graphics?

Depending on how far your monitor can go, experiment with all the resolutions in each of your games and see which works best for each.

It's all about what you feel the most comfortable with. With a system like that, you could technically run most (if not any) of the current games at your monitors max resolution.

1024x768 is what I use for most games (I'm on a 17" monitor though, 1280x1024 is my max resolution)

What's your monitor's max resolution and what's the refresh rate on your max resolution?

I have sim spec
AMD XP3200
geforce fx 5900 ultra

I play games at 1280X1024 and higher :)

Extream Tech recomend 1280x960 because it is the right aspect ratio unlike 1280X1024.

Oh and you wasted money on that FX but lets not go there :dozey:

Thats the max my flat moniter can go, and i have it on that all the time.

Fortuantely the refresh is pretty good, so i dont get the double image problem.

I used to think 1280x1024 was weird, but ivbe gotten used to it now. It doesnt squashed or anything.

On TFT screens you can only run one resolution on 17" its usually 1280x1024. All other resolutions look very weird. This is because it dedicates one pixel per pixel - ie. it has 1280 dots on one lenth and 1024 dots on the other lenght, as oppose to CRT screens wich can run in multiple resolution with no visible problems, due to the build of these.

yeh, my tft only looks good at 1024x768 and just looks very wierd and hurts my eys on the other reolutions.

That's one of the many reasons LCD's still stink for fast-paced gaming. Because the LCD-cell-per-pixel ratio is off at any resolution other than it's native, not only is the image blurry, but the ghosting effects are even worse.

The worst scenario is if you have a game that doesn't support your native resolution, so you're forced to play at a foreign res. BF1942, for example, doesn't support 1280x1024, so if you've got a 1280x1024 native res LCD, you're screwed.

I thought you could edit the config file manually for BF1942 to get custom resolutions? I might be thinking of another game.

I used to use 1600*1200 for every game that could handle it. I think it looks nicer like that than at 1024*768 w/ FSAA.

I run 1280x1024 4 AA/ 8 AF for most games on my 9800 Pro 128mb perfectly fine.

Increasing the resolution will look better than turning up AA but the performance loss is greater most of the time with todays cards.
