More likely: The tiny metallic thread in his money acted as a antenna which picked up the microwaves. This probably caused the thread - which is thinner than a human hair - to carry a few thousand volts. It would have vaporized.

Superhot metal + papermoney = fire.



Also, the fact that he had the bills in a huge wad probably contributed to the anti-theft gates and the burning. The magnetic fields created by the wires when they were nuked or activated by the gates magnetic field would have amplified each of the wires fiedl at such close proximity.

This would probably be enough to burn the money and set off the gates.
