What I have atm:

ATi Radeon 9800SE AIW 128MB <-- this is going regardless :)
AMD Athelon 2600+ <--- I like this processor tbh
ASRock KS78X <-- I'd get rid of this as I can't overclock with it, but I'm nervous about moving CPU and loosing data by reinstalling windows
768MB DDR RAM Unbranded <-- I'd like to get rid of this :P but I'd want HyperX or similar.. expensive ;(
Twin Seagate 40GB IDE 133 HDDs <-- I love these + following :D
MSI DVD-ROW 16X
MSI CD-RW 52x32x52x

Decent PSU, case and monitor (17" CRT) <--- not to be upgradeded :E

I'm interested in watercooling too.. not sure of how much I'd like to spend.. but it'd have to cool both CPU and VGA.

No prices outside of UK please :)

Why get rid of your herc 9800SE AIW? It flashes to a pro fine doesnt it? If i were you i would buy a socket 939 nforce 3 with a winchester A64. I would also add a single crucial Ballistix PC4000 512MB ram stick. Reasons?? The Winchester core has to be the best overclocking CPU on the market right now. Its almost 100% garuntee'd that the winchester 3000+ coupled with the PC4000 ram i suggested will run at 250FSB with ease at 9x multiplier. That makes for a speed of 2250MHz which is faster than a 3500+. I would only choose a single ram stick for now as when you have a little more cash a few months from now you could add another ballistic PC4000 512 stick for a total of 1 Gb running in dual channel...

So.... My overclockers.co.uk shopping list would be thus...

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (Socket 939) Motherboard £79.95
Crucial Ballistix PC-4000 BL6464Z505 512MB DDR £69.95
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester 90nm (Socket 939) Retail £94.95

VAT £42.85
Total £287.70

If your changing your motherboard, your gonna be pretty much reinstalling Windows period.. Ok you can probably run without doing that but it'll be very iffy.

Tbh mate I don't see why you want to make things go faster, that'll run fast enough, just run a lower res or lower AA if you want a big boost in framerate.

I've heard that you can do a repair install on Windows XP after getting a new motherboard, but I have also heard of people who have not been so lucky.

Lower res = 640 x 480

Lower AA = -2X

For some reason, HL2 runs godawful on my machine.

/me hijacks Badger's thread for his own devious purposes!

I'm in the same situation...I've got £350 to spend on an upgrade (or at least, I will), but I'm not sure what's best. I don't plan to upgrade again until next year at the very least, and I'm not looking to get the best on the market, just sometihng that will help last the rest of the year. :) I'd like to upgrade one or more of the following:

ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB <-- this is going regardless
AMD Athlon 2600+ @ 2Ghz
ASRock KS78X
512MB Pc2100 RAM
350W Power Supply (though I only plan to upgrade this if neccessary)

Yeah, scarily similar to CB's PC. :) It's just, I'm not sure whether I should get rid of that 9600 Pro or not. I just want to make sure I get my money's worth, and I'm not as well versed in this area as I like to think I am. :p Should I go straight for a 64-bit CPU, or get that video card up to spec and get a less powerful CPU? Or should I upgrade the RAM at the same time? It'd probably help if I have more money, heh...

when i put a new mobo in my mates pc it turned on did a weird thingy it said it detected a new mobo so it needed to check to see if it is still a "legal" version of windows went off did
that then it wanted raid drivers installed cos his new board had raid. other than that his pc ran fine :D
just tleave your pc faggin about for 10 mins when u up grade ( bit like when u install steam)

edit : omg kage has same rig as me but i got a athlon 2400 throughbred @ 2.265 GHz :P and a 9600 xt, same mobo as me !! yay it sux dont it :P

I'd probably recommend a re-install for the new hardware... it can work, but often ends up flakey / unstable / falls apart...

Yeah, that's a pity.. any way to say re-installing though? I really don't want to loose all these programs :|

Just back them up if you can.... Its possible to keep the same install but NOT recommended at all.

Anyhow i would upgrade CPU, mobo and RAM before touching the graphics as a high end graphics card will run poorly on a lower end system but a lower end graphics card will recieve a big performance boost if it has a powerfull PC underneath it!

re-install from scratch - not recommended to try "backing up" software unless it's software that's specifically designed for that!

jsut spent most of my day re-installing everything.... when I get to the end of this install sessio, I MUST Ghost my C: to DDVD!
