I thought I outta add this. I just gave Rivatuner another go and I can't believe the improvement, particularly with the custom fan settings feature. give the fans a certain speed when the temperature reaches a certain range. In hl2 ep 1 I went from average of 40-45 fps to 60! (vsync, it could be higher). I think the lower temperatures sure are helping. This is the guide I used as well as the version (2.09): http://www.vaguetech.com/index.php?pageid=rt207#sched

Rivatuner is a great progam. I use it for fan control since the one that came with my graphic card sucks.

It went as high as 80 before. Now its not going past 68. What I don't get is why the fan doesn't do this automatically when it was reaching those temperatures. Do they want us to void the warranty just to get decent performance?

You would have to OC to get more performance. The fan does nothing but get rid of heat. And a cooler running chip does nothing but run...cooler. If I remember correctly my Nvidia GPU is set by default to allow up to 115c temps.

Well I don't see what else it could be. I've changed nothing hardware or software wise, and I did play this game before rivatuner and it was as I described. I don't think 80 is really pushing though.

Could it be that your CPU was over heating and down clocked? Does your GPU get rid of heat out the back or keep it in the case?
Just because your GPU runs cooler does not mean you get faster FPS. There has to be some other explanation for why increasing your fan speed increased your performance. And maybe you will never know exactly what is going on. But I'm not saying I don't believe that happened, just that why you think you got more FPS... is not possible.

God damn, I played some CSS from a long time of...well no CSS, and I had it on the settings I've always had it on for best performance, max settings, 1280x800. Then I realised I was getting straight 59-60 fps on Dust 2. So I figured I'd bump it to 1440x900 and still kept getting it, so now I'm playing at max resolution 1680x1050 and only occasional dips to the upper 40s. I used to get clobbered by 20s-30s at these settings! Damn I love this program.

not really surprised about that performance but css is more cpu bound then gpu.

I'll also add Speedfan to the recommendation. Turns out my previous statement of CPU temps was incorrect. It turned out to be 58! But now its 48 max with the help of Speedfan. Just increase fan speed of the cpu. I would program it to certain temperature ranges but it has fluctuating incorrect readouts of my cpu cores. But according to Everest I am in the good.

I only used RivaTuner a few times to get triple buffering to work for Direct3D games, (a feature designed exclusively for the OpenGL API) and forcing triple buffering on some Direct3D games can have some...unforseen consequences. Plus, I'm not into overclocking my hardware, so therefore I quit using it as I had no futher need for it.
