well i just noticed something, i was bored

Romans: good for direct battles, infantry to infantry, can get scared by wierd things

Cartags: ok infantry, mainly rely on cavalry and elephants to cause the enemy to route (retreat), and then use infantry to mop up

You can win anything by just rushing all units to the biggest enemy force.

That'll get you slaughtered in the full game.

then what do you do?! im still screwed on medieval tactics... especially later in the game when the armies are much larger.

Gotta use terain to your advantage, high ground etc and attack units with the right unit.

Just rushing your units in is the shortcut to disaster. CA 'fixed' the RTW demo (making it easier for strat-n00bs) so that the Roman troops have a much lower morale rating -- they're right on the edge of breaking to begin with. Even upping the difficulty level doesn't appear to really make too much of a difference.

Check out the totalwar.com forums for all sorts of little fixes: play as the Romans, slow the running speed down, change the number and disposition of troops involved... Think someone's already working on an improved AI too.

I advise ya'll, if you haven't already, to go to twcenter.net's forums and download the "Rodeo" mod. It allows you to make completely custom battles and it's very user friendly. All you need to do is download the exe and then extract it to your root directory for the demo. :smoking:

Once you've done that just double click on the icon and walaa! Keep in mind everyone, that alot of these weather conditions were not supposed to be in, and some mess with the AI for some strange reason. Also, the mod uses your current clock time for battle time.

Here's a link to the thread:

Also, optionally, if you want a good extra "feature", download the Easymod v3 found here:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=6982

(There's also alot of other mods, as you can see) With easymod and Rodeo installed, hit Ctrl+D at the Rodeo menu and it will enable manual deployment... quite cool. :afro:

You are thinking of The Battle For Middle Earth :)

By the way, I strongly disagree about Carthage having mediocre infantry! Put them in Phalanx formation and remember to press "Hold" so they keep the formation. This can only be done with Pieone (spelling?) and Sacred Band infantry.

When properly set up, Carthage's troops can poke the Roman's from 10ft away and the romans can't get any closer, it's quite deadly. :) Remember however, that this severly limits mobility, thus a good way to counter a Phalanx is to send a widespread calvary charge right into the enemies back.

Roman infantry is the standard of the line infantry. Most Elite are the Triarii followed by Principes. If you must, use these hvy's out front to absorb the shock of a full frontal attack. Place skirmishers behind them to lob javelins over their heads. Take your calvary and "shift click" it around to the flanks of the enemy, then charge. <----Charging is good vs phalanxes, but remember FROM THE REAR, not the front :P .

One last note, don't use flaming arrows, they take a long time to load and they don't do that much more dmg. Much better kill vs time ratio with standard arrows.

Sorry for the long rant, I really tend to enjoy this game ;( :) .

For the demo, I met my opponent's infantry with my own infantry, holding them up. Then I boxed them in on both sides with my cavalry, which promptly slaughtered them. Then I used my calvalry/general to chase all the detractors and let the elephants finish an already de-moralized army.

I noticed that just 'catching' the enemy (slowing them down in a huge wall of your infantry) while they are being bombarded with arrows from your archers, and then send calavary into the flanks of the enemy, is very effective.

My favourite strategy is to setup the Poeni Infantry and Sacred Band Infantry (using the extended time mod) in one long continuous line of phalanx, about two or three ranks deep. It easily accomodates the first few waves of Roman attack, plus you can guard the infantry's flanks with cavalry and mercs. Cretan Archers behind the Infantry, of course. Set this up near the river but soften the Romans up first with a little elephant love while they're wading across... brilliant.

A good show of the startegy required to win a battle on this game is a battle that I made, where I as the Cartaghinians striked 1000 of Roman elite infantry with 3000 cavalry units.

This was at medium difficulty, and the Roman Principes managed to de-moralize most of the cavalry and wipe me out by just standing and waiting for the attack and then attacking my flanks.

what i did is i moved all my infantry to a single line, and held my elephants and cavalary units in reserve off to either side. then i had the cavs hiding in the woods attack from the rear, and the sacred ban that i started with near my general attack from teh left side.

my elephants then attacked the rear, heaidn towards my inaftry, the roman troops fled and hit my infantry and got cut up.

I've got my tactics in that pretty refined now...

As for Rome: Total War. Well you don't need strategy because its really just set up for you to win. Tell your elephants to attack the guys at the back and the Romans pretty much break under that. While the elephants are going through, you rush in the rest of your guys and bring the cavalry up the rear :O to finnish them off.

Try downloading the RoDeO mod, you can make it as hard for yourself as you like :)

Although defending stays a matter of stopping any advancements and then spook the infantry with cavalary and they run away.
