Hey all

I have been looking at the screen dumps on the net, and there is one that shows the rooftops quite early on in the game, now they look all bump mapped and have huge specular highlights (all very impressive) But when I accually go to this in the game, the textures are all flat.

here is a link

Let me know if any one have this sort of quality,

I have a Geforce 6 9800 128MB

Many thanks all

Thats not from hl2, thats a source engine demo bink movie shot.
They didnt put stuff like that in HL2 cos it'd hurt the framerate

Apart from the HDR effects in that source vid, a few of the effects look to have simply been boosted. And you "might" even be able to fake some of it. The reflections for example, on the roof tiles.

make a sealed hollow brush somewhere off map, with very bright surfaces, place a cubemap entity inside it and link it up to the rooftiles, then when you buildcubemaps, the tiles will take the reflection images from the bright box rather than the surrounding area.

Course it still wont be super bright because its still LDR, but it'll be close. Or even just edit the regular cubemaps so things are much brighter where they should be and darker elsewhere, also not forgetting to up the reflection amount on the tile material itself.

It's not perfect, but it might work.
