Believe it or not, it was pretty painful to learn how to make a decent looking (and functioning) roof so I thought I'd share this tutorial.

//This tutorial assumes you have a basic understanding of how
//Hammer and the Clipping Tool work but even if you don't, this
//shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

First thing is to have your walls set up and ready to go. I personally make half a building at a time and then mirror it over.

[see gif walls]

Then create another block directly above either the top or bottom wall (the short ones, not the long one). The larger this block is, the steeper your roof will be. Adjust as needed. With this new block selected, click on the "Clipping Tool" button.

Click on the box to bring up the white clipping line. Now you want to be very precise when you ensure that the light blue line goes all the way from corner to corner. Zoom in as far as you can to make sure that it's an exact cut.

[see gif clipping tool]

Once your triangle is cut, copy it over to the other side so that you have a matching pair.

[see gif two triangles]

Now the part that took me way too long to figure out: create another block that matches the width of your two walls and spans the length of your building. With your "Selection Tool" selected, click on the block twice to bring up the skew boxes. Skew the block until it matches the angle you created with the clipping tool earlier. Again be sure to zoom in as much as needed to match it up.

[see gif skew]

Now you have a perfectly aligning roof. Congratulations.

It was painful? Damn usage of the clip tool to make a roof like that should be common knowledge.

It wasn't an issue of knowing how each tool functions but rather of knowing how to use all those functions together to form something....functional. It's more of a cookbook than a tutorial I suppose.

And I must ask Kyo, since this is all petty and beneath you, that you grant us a glimps of your infinite wisdom and share some of your Hammer tips. If we are worthy that is.

Oh your worthy allright. It depends on what help you need in perticular. I'm more than willing to have a conversation about mapping. I only use MSN and IRC (rarley)

Email me at alpheus @ iprimus.com.au with any questions.

I still remember the days when I made rooms by hollowing cubes and I love helping people who try. I guess I came across somethings faster than others. I've considered writing tutorials for quite awhile now and this may be the corner stone that brings it about. I just need some ideas of what to write tuts about.

I'll forgive the arrogance if you can provide a complete and thorough lighting tutorial for shadow-eqsue day and night scenes. I'll even congratulate you.

Step 1: Select a night-time skybox for your map.

Step 2: Put a light_environment in your map and set it to a light blue colour with a low alpha value.

Congratulations, your map will now have a night-time theme.
That's half of it done :)

All right I can do that. Just give me some time. At present I'm at school working on science.

sigh stupid tutorial... You dont even need to create triangle on the top just clip the 3 first brush and then add an other brush for the roof
its even more basic then your tutorials and save a few polygon.

As with Kyo I must ask that if your knowledge of Hammer is so vast and infinite that you provide a set of your own tutorials rather than simply sitting back and harping on others'. I realize I'm not the grand master of Hammer but at least I attempt to help people. "stupid tutorial" is hardly what I'd consider contructive criticism.

Well read the whole message I describe how to make it better... try to dont get stuck after 3 words...

Constructive critisism never insults the tutorial itself now does it?
