Well I can play all Valve games fine but for some Halo (for pc) servers and all Gunz:The Duel servers, I cannot connect, I'm in university where I connect directly into the wall w/ ethernet cable for high speed access. I'm wondering if a router would make a difference; what I think may be the issue is port forwarding, are all ports already forwarded since I'm directly connected to the wall? Or does a router HAVE to do that for me?

START/CONTROL PANEL/NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS/NETWORK CONNECTIONS/ RIGHT-CLICK on INTERNET CONNECTION/ PROPERTIES/ SETTINGS/ SERVICES tab

There you go, that is how to forward ports on a direct connection on Windows XP Pro SP2

Its probably the ports your university is blocking though

7700-7800? (those are the ports for Gunz),
oh yeah forgot to mention that I have Windows media center edition (not sure whether it has the same thing but I'll check when i go back after weekend),
also, do you know how to do it for Home Edition? (my friend's comp, same place, same problem)

The connection you are connecting to will have blocked ports blocked by the admin. Your best bet is to get him drunk then get him to unblock them.

Otherwise, set up a VPN to another machine through an open port. (You will need another machine/compatible router set up offsite though.

buying a router is pointless if your recieving the internet from the router which is doing the blocking.
