I just downloaded KlipFolio and am adding all my favourite sites to it, and I was wondering if this site had a KlipFolio klip, or an RSS feed. I'm guessing it doesn't, as I can't see anything on the main page, but I hope someone can correct me on this.
If there is no RSS feed or such right now, would it be possible to set one up? If so, that would be awesome, as it would save me having to check the front page every 30 minutes hoping for some HL2 release news :D

Fraid not ;( There's no way to do it with our current news system.

Even though you just changed it? (or at least that's what I thought you did)

Bah, of course it can be done. You simply write a php script that grabs the newsposts from the newsforum out of the database, just like you do with the current newsscript, and generate the standard RSS stuff around it (which is basically some simple xml). You give the users the link to the script et voila, the xml rss the script outputs is used for their feed. Get your local php wizard to work, munsy :p

Googled up a simple example script

Oh... where did that come from :O

Ok I downloaded KlipFolio, and clicked that link. I have no clue what to do to setup the feed from the site here. Somebody mind giving me some pointers?

I think I speak for the majority of the 13,000 members when I ask, WTH is RSS anyway?

To get KlipFolio to work with an RSS feed (i.e without a KlipFolio klip file) you need to get the "FeedViewer" klip. You can get that here. Once you have downloaded and opened that, you right click on the blank klip with the smiley face on it that has appeared in KlipFolio, and select Klip Setup. From there, click the Feed tab, and put in the link that StarMonkey gave. Then you can mess around with the other settings such as icon if you want. Man, I hope all that made sense...

Edit: RSS, well, I dont know what it stands for, but its a standard (like html) used to send news headlines from sites directly to a program on your desktop, allowing you to instantly see any news updates, and click on the ones you want to read, opening them in your browser.

Edit2: Included a screengrab of KlipFolio with the HL2 news feed, for all those wondering what RSS is.

Um... I meant to change that to say "what RRS can do", but couldnt because of the time limit on editing. Oops. I sounded like an idiot there.

woo. Can you get it to do that for like.. Just the info from valve thread? on a per post basis?

Haha. It isn't important. I mistakenly set myself up to recieve massive amounts of email on a weekly basis. Besides i'm here 10 times a day. I always check. :)

Although I did figure out if you change the numbers It will show new posts in any of the other forums too.

i looked on vb site, and there doesnt seem to be a para for topics, only forums

I use a program called webmon that periodically checks sites for new content based on saved versions and start/stop things that I choose. Works pretty well for me.

RSS feeds are really best not for individual users, but for other sites, like Slashdot.org to create those little "boxes" where they have the news headlines off of other sites. My own private community site does this several different sites with customizable boxes and so on. It's a good way to bring new readers to site, but of course you have to get other sites to agree to set up a box for your site.

Yeah, as Apos said - RSS feeds are mainly for other sites to be able to have our headlines on them. For individual use your best bet is to just subscribe to that forum.
If it helps, I can also set external.php to output XML.

And Munro, outputting to RSS/XML is something vbulletin has done for quite a while now, you just never turned it on :p

I have to disagree with the statement that RRS arent usefull to individuals.

I use sharpreader (http://www.sharpreader.net), i have about 30 different rss feeds going into from a sites like BBC.co.uk to web developer blogs (meyer, zeldman). All u do is find an RSS link and drop drag it into the sharperreader application. Its displayed like an email app such as thunderbird or outlook. New topics are in bold etc.

Instead of me checking these sites daily, my rss agregator picks up on new items in the rss feeds. So i know when new content is there for me to read. Codename gordan has an rss feed. You may remember how there where little updates. Well, i never checked the site, just waited for the rss feed to show a new news topic.

:)

I've been using RSS feeds with the Firefox browser for a while now and it's great. All the headlines for my favourite sites in one column, and the stories are just a single click away! So I disagree that it's mainly for other sites, I find it very very handy.

StarMonkey, the rss link you gave doesn't work too well. It shows the latest posts in the News forum, and it should be showing the first post, which actually contains the story :)
