Nintendo Futurna. Not VR but cool. *UPDATE

Nintendo Futurna UPDATE:
“Phoenix” as he calls himself, now tells me that I can expect more from him sometime after the 3rd. I’ve seen a lot of pranks concerning the Revolution in my time so I think we all know that if nothing pops up after the 3rd then this guy is full of it. He told me to announce there is one more key peripheral coming. Well I guess we’ll just have to see.

*Nintendo Futurna UPDATE: You saw it here first at Playbomb.com! Man this guy just doesn’t stop! The guy said I could just call him Phoenix. He told me not to quote his e-mail message this time or I won’t be recieving anymore material. So no “quoting“. I’m beginning to see how awesome this would be. It looks like the screen in the picture the guy sent me can scroll up into a small tube. Either this guy is just really really good or this is actually what Nintendo means by revolutionizing portability.

Here’s the second image he has sent me:

Nintendo Futurna UPDATE: He tells me that the images of the Futurna in these pictures (he wouldn’t tell me what the pictures were of) were images from early conceptual stages and that this model of the “Revolution” as we have been calling it are a bit larger than even what they had shown at E3. So I guess this was a while back.

He also said there is some kind of control panel on the side of the Portascreens that are navigated with a little stylus that sits in the top of the unit. Supposedly those ovalish areas on either side of the screen are speakers. He said since that time the Nintendo Futurna has been made much smaller and the Portascreens have changed a whole lot but he doesn’t have the means to show me.

Once again people, I cannot guarantee that this is legitimate. This guy seems convincing though, I’m going to take it with a grain of salt but I definitely find this concept to be awesome.

Disclaimer: Playbomb.com does not just post random rumors. If it *might* be real then we want to post it just in case it ends up being the big news and we had it first.

I got this in the inbox:

“hey,
i figured since there is only about a month left until the full unveiling i would go ahead and send this out. i havent sent it to anyone else. i think youll like it”

Here’s the fullsize image that was sent to me: Fullsize

I’m not sure if this is actually what the Nintendo Revolution is or not but I will tell you right now, I wouldn’t be dissapointed. If it’s photoshopped it’s very good, if it’s not then heck yeah - but I have a feeling it probably is just because I doubt the Revolution will shoot crazy little lightning beams out of it. : P

I’m guessing the person plans on sending it to all sorts of places actually. Probably trying to make me feel special so I’ll post his crap or something. Either way, it’s cool looking. I dig.

Nintendo Futurna UPDATE: The system name is Futurna. Well, according to these pictures which may or may not be real. I was calling them fake at first but now I’m not so sure. It just seems like a plausible realistic thing Nintendo would do. I think the light beams just represent the projection and the pictures aren’t literal. Either way it still could be fake, I’m not going to have an up front opinion on this one, it’s teetering on the verge of real and fake.

The Article:

eeentrestring... but rather vague. I get that there is a projection system, but what is this used for? and what is the extra peripheral in the first pic?

have to say i'm not overly keen on the name though :x

I don't get it.
Me neither...
Is this another Revolution mock-up or something?
A peripheral maybe?

WTF is going on here? What is this shit? That article was f*cking retarded

There's no way in hell I believe that nintendo would be stupid enough to call it "Futurna." Shit that's dumb.

I am still not sure I entirely understand what this "Futurna" is, but it might actually be more believable than I first thought. For years now, many electronics companies have been developing roll-up LCD displays and a few have actually been very successful. SonyCorp, for example, has developed one that is 0.35mm thick and can display an industry-high resolution of 79dpi. Pretty good if you ask me and it will only get better in a few years. Read that whole article here.

So if Nintendo is indeed working on something of this sort as a peripheral for the Revolution to transmit to, then this console is truly one of the most innovative and seriously "next-gen" systems we have ever seen. I guess we'll have to wait and see if its actually true or not...but I sure hope it is.

YOU ARE A FILTHY LYING WHORE

Don't speak such trash.

Yeah, I'd say it's a fake. Cool idea, retarded name, but almost definitely just a product of some serious free time.

So is it bascially a portable projection screen that is compatible with the Revolution?

Yeah, I'm not seeing the "next-gen" that some people are clamoring about.

So whats this suppose to do? I really dont get it.

I guess it's so you won't have to carry a big television screen with you, but instead some kind of toothbrush-shaped stick with a paper in it.

I doubt it's real, cause then you'd only be able to see anything when it's dark..

If it is a protable screen then it basically means you can play the system anywhere even if there is no TV nearby. Unique idea that I would say is very good but I am pretty sure its fake.

ha beat you to it

Aww. ;(

From now on everytime you beat me. I shall kill you.
Argh I guess I died once now :x

edit: oh wait.. from now on.. that means not this time :D :p

Well, the picture says...

* Naked Eye Stereoscopic 3D experiences via:
* Portascreen Mirrored LED Light Amplification Modules
* High Interval Dual Projection system via:

... then, it cuts off.

If the "Naked Eye" 3D part is true... it would work really well with the 3D control scheme to make your interaction feel even more natural. Still, at best, it looks borderline believable. Let's just say I'm not going to hold my breath until this appears.

I still think its fake but what was said here certainly makes you think:
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_45/b3958127.htm

In the future, what do you think video games will be like?
Miyamoto: It's convenient to make games that are played on TVs. But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn't the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I've always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that.

Yes, that does make you think. He is all but saying that he is working on that, but doesn't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet. There is still an awful lot we don't know about this system and I am very excited to get more details. While this particular tidbit might indeed be a fake, the idea is most likely not that far from the truth. Wait and see....

Looks fake. Note the times new roman basic noobcake font in that image.
That's how you know they're smart! Also the simple sentences!

There have already been several display systems (including LCD monitors) that work on that principle... though, I don't know if it works in any rear projection systems, yet. So, I can't judge whether or not that specific technology exists.

How would that even be possible? :/ You need 2 differect images for each eye, without one eye seeing the other's... how can that be projected?! The only way I can imagine is by having 2 displaytoothbrushes next to eachother, but then you need to cross your eyes :rolling: now that would give headaches :(

I know at least Sharp, Phillips, and DTI all have working no-glasses 3D LCD monitors. Here's an article about how the Sharp one works.

Now, as I said, I have no idea if something like that's even possible in a rear-projection system. The polarizing for blocking light to individual eyes would be tricky when the screen itself doesn't know where the pixels are being projected. 3D viewing with polarization in projection systems tends to use special polarized lenses in a cheap pair of glasses... specifically because of that issue.
