I am going to buy HL2 after I am done my term papers but I will be running the game on these specs:
2.8 GHZ Pentium 4
512 RAM
ATI 9200se
I know that my video card isn't the best, but do you guys think I will be able to run HL2 quite well and smoothly on my video card if I was in 800x600 mode at least? Any info would be much appreciated, thank you.

you'd be able to run it, but don't expect any fancy water effects, or nice graphics.

When you play at medium quality in 8x6 and change the render path you be ok regarding your cpu.

Try edit the rendering path you need to change your shortcuts path to this: "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -console in order to get in the console when playing, now push tilde (~) and type: mat_dxlevel80

70 or 81 or 90 are the options whatever works best.

I guess in dx8 it will still look great.

The video card is the only thing letting you down. I don't think I personally would play arguably one of the best games ever made on a 9200se.. It will more than likely dampen the expereince. I recommend you just wait a bit till you can get at least a 9600(they are cheap) and then you should be able to play on at least meduim settings with decent fps.

Correct, you shuld be able to play at 800x600 medium quality as long as you force DX8.1. It will be the most beutiful slideshow you've ever seen in DX9 mode :)

Upgrading is another thing.

I agree to what you say,but in the event he wants to upgrade shouldn't he at least get a 9800pro ($200) or a 6600GT ($200).

Both great cards in my opnion, the 6600GT is faster in openGl (read: Doom3).

Edit: I am not to fond of getting a 9600 now for current and future games, but on low budget it's sort of ok,get at least a "pro" preferably an "xt"

My 9600XT runs half-life 2 BEAUTIFULLY on high settings and no aa or af. 50-100 frames (50 outside) and I have a 3ghz p4. Don't skimp on the 9600xt's. They aren't as shitty as you think them to be ;) Good card for $100

I don't think they are shitty, but as an upgrade I mean in the world of 9800's and 6600's it just lack that little...,I consider it a budget card, but obviously a pretty good one.

I agree for $100 (an 9600XT?) it's bang for the buck.

u'll defenatley run it fine in the DX7 route. personally i dont think there is much difference between DX8 and 9.
