So you got HL2, only to find out that your hardware settings ate too high, and the little box you can't change to bring the DX level down haunts your dreams..... well after many forum posts and useless info that you already know, I eventually found a site with some good info.
"The Hardware DirectX level field indicates what rendering path you are currently using. You can specify alternate rendering paths by using the following commandline switch: -dxlevel xx, where xx is 90 for DirectX 9, 81 for DirectX 8.1, 80 for DirectX 8.0 and 70 for DirectX 7.0."
you can chage this in the advance user field by clicking on the launch options button in the games properties window outside the game.
*note* you can not set the game to run at a higher level then your card can go.
