Yes mate I've got the exact same problem. So far I haven't found anyone else reporting it so we've got to have something in common. I've got the retail DVD version of the game.

My setup:
P4 3.0 Northwood @ 34.Ghz
ASUS P4P800
1GB Twinmos Dual PC3200 @ PC3632
Radeon 9500 @ 9700
Maxtor 120GB
Maxtor 20GB
M-Audio Delta 66
Soundblaster Live Platinum
WinTV 2000
LG Supermulti DVD-RW GSA-4081B
Windows XP Pro SP1

Here's what i've tried so far:
Re-installed HL2 (twice)
Latest Omega Radeon drivers 2.5.90
Latest M-Audio drivers 5.10.00.0048
De-Clocked CPU & RAM to defaults
De-Clocked GFX to defaults
Installed new MCVRT71.DLL (Microsoft C++ Runtime Library)
Installed Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Re-installed Steam
Updated DVD-RW Firmware

Still no joy but maybe if you post your detailed specs we might find a common problem.

Cheers

... fyi

I've since:

Installed latest official ATI catalysts 4.11.
Installed .NET Framework Service Pack 1.
Installed Direct X 9 Runtime Components from the HL2 DVD.
Ran the Modify tool from the HL2 DVD menu and fully un-installed.
Disabled all antivirus, monitoring, tweaking & firewall software.
Fully re-installed the game & Steam to default directories.

And.....nope. Same error still. I'm gonna bite the bullet and install Windows XP SP2.

Finally..someone with the same problem. (not that ik like it for you, but now maybe we can find a solution)

in our systems the only common things i can find are we both have an Asus motherboard, and an Maxtor HD.

i have tried the most things you have tried to, and to the last replyer : i do have SP2 (installed a while ago) but that doesnt seem to be the solution.

well..keep trying dude's..:)
there MUST be something to do about it, or do we need to buy a ****ing other pc. I WANT TO PLAY HALFLIFE2!

Could you download this tiny app and run it on your system and send me or post the results. If there's software conflicts this way I'll be able to see what we do have in common. I dont think it's hardware anymore, tried almost everything there.

It Works

yesssahh i got it running..dunno what it was, but i just formatted my C disc..and now it works perfectly :bounce:

Great, thanks for that post and i'm sorry you had to reformat to get it working. I noticed that we both have Creative SB Live and on that other forum someone mentioned secondary devices as being the key. I disabled my SB Live but it still wouldnt work, however when I disabled my TV Card - Hauppage Win TV - IT DID WORK!

cheers again...now, about this game....

my problem

I get runtime error abnormal program termination, c++ library errror
when I try to load my security system pc card (geovisions) there must be something we have in common, my system was working fine, then my wife had a virtual memory problem and started deleting icons of the desktop and then I had this problem, now i have added more ram and did my updates and checked my dll files for mpeg4 32.dll or something and still haven't solved this problem.

Runtime error : abnormal prog termination ... solution

I've been getting this type of error when i installed my hl2.exe:

Runtime error ... c++ ...blah blah ...abnormal termination
(not neceserily in that order ... LOL)

This error appeared after i correctly patched the game.

when ever i tried to save or load a game save, the game freezes and shows that error.

Here is how i solved it:

i created a shortcut like this:

"D:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2\hl2.exe" -steamlocal -dxlevel 81 -novideo -w 640 -h 480 -32bit -refresh 50

(offcourse you might want to direct the hl2.exe where you installed it)

the command line switches are sent to hl2.exe application and it lowers the resolution to 640x480 and it runs on

DirectX 8.1 Level.

I sugest lowering all graphics to minimum ...stuff like texture quality and similar ...everything to low and

minimum.

I Deleted all the "Autosave" saves too...

After this when i started up the game thru this shortcut, the error wasn't showing anymore and everything worked

just fine.

My guess is that this C++ runtime error appears due to an incompatible graphics instructions sent to graphics card.

It Could be that Sierra programmers made some mistakes during programing.

I had this problem on these machines and systems, and i solved the problem on all of them :) ...

Machine #1:

Laptop AmiloPro v2030, 1.8Ghz Processor, 765MB RAM (Shared memory resource), and 40GB Hard drive, Integrated

graphics card, Windows xp Professional SP2, DirectX 9.0c

(Believe it or not, it worked on my laptop just fine ... it was a bit laggy sometimes but it was playable)

Machine #2:

ComTrade Desktop pc, 3.06Ghz Celeron D Processor, 2GB Ram, 160GB HDD, Windows Vista HomeProfessional, Graphics are

integrated: Intel chipset family, DirectX 10

(Worked like a charm)

...i realy liked the first half-life and i definitely like half-life 2...
as far as im concirned with playing games ...i enjoy more the story and action in them than super hot maximum real

life graphics and stuff like that in them.

...as long as it works im happy :)

i hope this helped someone. Cheers.
