Hi!
After spending yesterdays night (22h-03h cet) trying to register a steam account, the game finally was ready to play.
And surprise!
I got the steam loading windows, then when the game seems about to startup i had:
---------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime error!
program: xxxxx\yyyyy\zzzz\hl2.exe
abnormal program termination
---------
Disapointing huh?
All this wait for a bug.
Quite disgusted, i checked if CS would start... and the same error appeared... I'm sure persistant, so i also checked the F9 key in the editor to see if it could launch a preview from a template scene. It outputed some random logs, then nothing... no render windows...
I was stuck...
Here are the different things I checked:
- DX: i have dxsdk 9.0c, so i checked that i enabled the "retail" version of the dlls... no problem there.
- I tryed to launch from steam or with the shortcuts (i had to try, by I had no illusions)... and for sure there was no change, same error again.
- In the depth of despair i changed my drivers.... 4 TIMES!!!! I checked ATI catalysts 4.2/4.8/4.12beta/4.11 in that order, with each time a true clean disinstallation... and for sure it solved nothing.
- I also tryed to delete the client thing files in steam (an idea someone gave on another forum) but the problem wasnt solved, i just had to relog on steam, except that there error was still there.
- I checked the dependencies of hl2.exe with a dependancy walker and saw that there was a broken link in a MCP.dll (or something like that). On a method for a socket connection if i remember well. They linked on a deprecated method (valid for 98/me but not for 2k and xp from an internet website source). But i'm quite sure it cant be that!
That's terrible! My config is not that extraordinary:
AMD 2700+, Abit NF7-S, hercules Radeon 9800 (non pro, with no bios trick to make it pro), working 512 sdram 2700. I have 2 display screens in dualhead but it shouldnt be a problem and launch on the primary head like all the other games do!
I had no problems with the other games i played (myst 4, d3, farcry...)
Shaders in my own apps (and others) are working perfectly.
I found no other place to alert Valve about bugs or issues. And nothing is said in their help system about any runtime error.
Someone experianced the same problem?
Could someone please help me!
