This is a great day for Korea. :D

South Korea's first space rocket lifted off from the country's launch pad on the southern coast Tuesday, carrying a scientific satellite into orbit.

The rocket, called the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1), soared into the sky at 5 p.m. from the Naro Space Center, about 485 kilometers southwest of Seoul.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute, which is in charge of the launch, said that 540 seconds after blastoff, the scientific satellite will separate from the rocket at an altitude of 2,055 km and deploy its solar panels, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Mission controllers said the first contact with the satellite will take place 11 to 13 hours after the liftoff.

In other news, N. Korea condemned the launch.

Does the satellite look something like this?

Well, it failed, but still good job!

Jesus ****.

ARfhgghhghg.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), the country's space agency, said that the satellite was separated from the second stage of the rocket nine minutes after the 5 p.m. launch as planned.

But the spacecraft was then 342 kilometers above waters near Australia, instead of the 306-kilometer attitude it was supposed to hit.

The satellite was programmed to send back signals to a Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) research center in Daejeon early Wednesday. However, the STSAT-2 is not likely to contact the ground facilities in time, if it ever does, as KARI officials have yet to confirm whether the satellite remains in a position to circle the Earth or bounced off completely into the abyss.

Austrailia, if something hits you within the next 14 hours, we're sorry. :p

Well, I'm still hoping that it's circling the world at a different altitude. The people at KAIST aren't giving up hope.

"Korea has a wealth of experience in solid-fuel rocket engines, but most of the technology was developed for missiles. It is known that solid-fuel engines are harder to ignite when they are in space," Kwon said.

****. Yeah we can build rockets that can destroy shit, but can't build rockets that can halp mankind reach space.

Although KARI officials expressed regret over the misplaced satellite, it's difficult to say that was the priority. Using a massive, 140-ton launcher that generates more than 170 tons in thrust to carry a satellite as little as STSAT-2, when the payload capacity is likely several times bigger than that, is a proof that Naro engineers were focused on poking into the higher skies and not much more.

Yay?

oh that's what they want you to believe:

So the rocket was actually so powerful that instead of hitting low orbit it carried the satellite into deep space?

I'm pretty sure that's the coolest failure ever.

So? Does it matter what there political system is? China is a communist country, should we all be like "OH THERE A DANGER TO THE WORLD, EVERYTHING THEY DO WE MUST CONDEMN"

South Korea doesn't make constant threats about how they are going to melt the USA to the ground.

They also don't make constant threats about how they're going to melt Europe, Russia, and everyone that doesn't agree with their ridiculous ideology into atomic sludge.

NK is a bag of nutter butters through-and-through and they only reason Russia hasn't squashed them is China wants a tool and they keep it safe.

Kim Jong Il is a ****wit along with everyone else in NK. At least SK has a sane leader, even if they do have congressional brawls (which are AWESOME!).

When N. Korea does something like this everyone screams, every puts sanctions against them, but when S. Korea does it, it's fine.

When N. Korea does something like this, they really are testing the distance of their Taepong-2 missiles, everyone screams, every puts sanctions against them, but when S. Korea does it, it's fine.

N.Korea tested Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.

EDIT:
In case it wasn't obvious - the title of the thread is a joke. It's not really a ballistic missile.

SK aren't commies.

Which means they would never ever ever ever attack anyone else.
Why don't you people get it, commies want to kill you while noncommies want to establish telecommunications. All who think this is biased are dumb.
