Please read it, it's not as long as it seems!, it's kind of a rant, but I will like to know what you guys think of this...
I kind of feel sad every time a console is left behind with no support (by their makers) just because their new next-gen consoles are there. I understand they want full support for their new next-gen power consoles, but a more seamless transition should be made, it's ironic but with all the SONY hating around this days, I find SONY the company that supports the most its last-gen consoles even when its new consoles are out, PS1 had a good 1 to 2 years run even after the arrival of the PS2, it seems that the PS2 will also have more support for at least one more year thanks to titles like God of War 2 etc.
Enter Microsoft, who pulled the plug on the XBOX as soon as its new baby was out, yes, you can say it has some more titles after the 360's launch, but they were generic franchises and nothing really stellar, the final nail in the XBOX 1's coffin is the release of new Halo 2 multi players maps that will only work on the 360!! C'mon it's a XBOX game For God's Sake!!
I think the biggest backstab was the one SEGA did to its own Dreamcast, heck I still think it was the superior console of its generation, and what about Nintendo??, does Miyamoto and company treat their old-gen consoles good??, NO!!!!, once the DS surface all of Nintendo's attention turned to its new portable, and what about the Gamecube???? Well, I just saw this: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=221
and kind of inspired me to write all this "rant", its tragic-comic, and like I said, sad but true...

Opnions???????

While I do not agree with everything you said, I must acknowledge that at least you can write ;)

Unfortunately there's no reason for game companies to continue to support they're consoles once they are superseded, except that it's nice to the customers. If a company like SONY thinks it can make more money by supporting it's newest console with advertising, support and game development than continuing to invest in an older model, then it's obvious what it'll do. I mostly agree with you, and it would be nicer if companies cared about the general public more, but, sadly, they're in it for the money.

but there is a reason!, all the installed fan based and all consoles that are in millions of homes, maybe that's the reason why SONY wouldn't dare to pull the plug so soon with all the millions of PS2s around the world...
I don't know, maybe it was that vgcat comic that put me in a sentimental mood :D
poor gamecube just died... :O

Console Developers are not the ones who make games geared for a particular console. It's the game developers themselves that do. Do not blame Microsoft or Sony for lack of new game releases for older consoles. Blame game companies who want to focus their efforts on the newer consoles, with the hope of capturing ground in a new venture.

the new consoles are still a gamble because of the lack of an installed base ...making games for older consoles makes sense. the ps2 isnt dead yet ..the xbox however died early last year but microsoft needed to move beyond the xbox if they wanted market share dominance (or at least a head start) over this generation.

Actually Console developers play a big part, do you think the Dreamcast was killed because lack of good games? it was SEGA who decided to pull the plug, do you think Microsoft didn't have to do with Halo 2 maps only playable in the 360's???, Nintendo could have launch Zelda for the gamecube ages ago, they just didn't want to steal wii's thunder, don't down play console developer's part, while not entirely, they share the guilt along with game developers...

As I under things, the Xbox was Microsoft's experimental foray into the videogame console market. It was meant to be a test to see if it was possible to break into a market already dominated by the industry giants of Sony and Nintendo. The success of the Xbox proved that Microsoft could become a serious contender in the console market, and the numbers show that their risk paid off. The 'last gen console war' has the Xbox in second place behind the PS2, and this is with the PS2 having a 2 year lead. By the look of things, Microsoft's Xbox experiment was a success, and thus we have the Xbox360. For Microsoft, the Xbox was just a test, and thus there was no need to keep supporting an experiment if it is already proven to be a success. With it's graphical capabilities, solidly growing games library, and excellent online service, the Xbox 360, Microsoft's first TRUE attempt at breaking into the console market, is shooting to become the victor in the current 'console wars.'

That is one of the reasons that I tend to buy Playstation products, long lifespans. The PS2 came out a year before the X-BOX and still hasn't died yet ... the X-BOX died last year. Not to mention the PS2 got a lot more top quality games than the X-BOX did. The same can be said for the PS1. If I had to guess I'd say the PS3 will outlast the 360 as well.

Looking back, getting either the PS1 or PS2 early turned out to be a good investment. Not as much for the X-BOX, Gamecube, and to a lesser extent the N64. We'll see how it goes this gen, but I'm guessing you'll see the trend continue.

Agreed. I got my PS2 6 years ago and it still has some top games being released, like Bully and God of War 2 etc etc.

Hey Anthraxxx this Microsoft propaganda is fine and dandy, but I fail to see what does it have to do with this thread, this thread is not about "who is going to win the next-gen war", I am more interested in your opinions of if do you think console makers pull the plug from their consoles when they still have and can co-exist with their new next-gen counterpart.

My point exactly, Ironic that with all the SONY hating, they seem to support the most their old consoles, recent tittles like Okami, Final Fantasy XII and God of War 2 in the near future, show that the PS2 it's alive and kicking, I would love to see the same loving for the other consoles...

My point was that the reason for Microsoft dropping it's support for the Xbox was that it was an experimental system. The system was never meant to be as successful as it was.

I'm not ignoring Sony either. The PS2 is probably one of the best consoles i've ever owned(second only to SNES). However, I forsee Sony stopping support for the PS2 within the next 2 years. And once Sony stops supporting it, developers are going to stop making games for it. Just look at PS1 and how long it lasted once the PS2 came out. The same thing is going to happen with the PS2 now that the PS3 is out. Making the PS3 successful is going to require a lot of effort from Sony, expecially with it having such a bad start.
