Right, I wasn't sure whether this oughta go in the ole tech section, but seeing as it's to do with sales as well, I figured I'd start here and have it thrown out later. Rightso, this is my PSU oddessey (of sorts) :

I bought a Soltek EQ3702 barebones system, and a bunch of other stuff. With the amount of devices I wanted to connect to the PSU, five, there were only four 4-pin sockets. So my cousin and I improvised by splicing another 4-pin onto the floppy drive connector. It would appear this didn't do the ol' PSU a hell of a lot of good, as the poor dear blew up.
And so here's where I get a bit anxious. I have corresponded with the place where I got it from and they have given me an "RMA number" so I send it (the whole barebones system, not just the PSU) back to them and they, in theory, send me a replacement. Now is it possible they will say to me (bearing in mind I'll remove the wire that was cut, natch):
"F*ck yourself this is your fault, deal with it you gimp" and then send the broken thing back to me
Or will they be a bit lazy, take a quick not-too-detailed look and simply send me a new one? I know the last one sounds a bit feckless for a company, but I'm holding out for that...
Any thoughts on whether the blag could work. Cheese on toast for all that are nice and helpful, as always.

By the way, I'd just like to point out that I am usually a good, upstanding and honest person, but in this case I have spent good money on this and I'll be f*cked if I have to buy a new one without trying to blag it first. I am a poor student. Pity me.

If it's as obvious as a spliced cable, don't bet on getting it back.

Nah, I'm tugging that out...
But if I sent it and they did suspect that it was all my fault - would they send it back to me or would they keep it? After all, I did pay for it.

I bought a ti4600 from overclockers.co.uk and overcloked it a little too far and fried a memory module which gave me permanent on screen artifacts. Sending it back in that state would have probably reulted in them returning it as they would have known the memory was damaged through overclocking. So i simply overclocked the card as far as it would go and left the machine on. 5 minutes later the machine reset by itself and on booting wouldnt even get past the first stage of POST! How could they test the card if they couldnt boot the machine that has it installed? ;)

Long story short i got my replacement card 5 days later...

So you got your card back. What about the computer? :P

OK - so the likelihood is that, even if they decide that it certainly IS my fault, they'll at least send it back to me?
And given the situation what do you think the likelihood is? How thorough will be they be?
How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky? Why is the sky blue? Why is Enrique Iglesias popular?

Wether the equipment is shafted or not you still own it so they will send it back.

Ok well that's a start I guess. Cheers.
And sorry to keep on and on - what d'you think about my chances?

Most companies these days don't particularly care, they'll probably just give you a replacement with no hassle.

It's like in mcdonalds if you eat a burger and drop the last piece on the floor, they have to give you a new one... its to keep the customer happy!

Plus in big puter companies the people that check the faulty bits don't get any more/less money if they make a fuss about a missing cable or just say 'what the hell, replace it'... so I wouldn't worry too much.

Plus you can always use the line 'It was like that when I got it, honest!'

Good luck, anyways.

Thank you very much - it's always nice to hear what you WANT to hear...
