I just purchased a Raptor Sata drive and have successfully installed it with my Maxtor IDE drive. The Maxtor 60gig drive is set up as windows, and the Sata as a gaming drive. When ever I try to move, install anything on the new drive everything works for a like 10-20 secs then windows freezes and I must reset the computer.

Computer specs:

P4C800E-Deluxe Mobo
Pentium 4 2.8C w/HT @ 3.10 GHz
Kingston PC-3500 2x512 kit in Duel channel mode
Creative SoundBlaster Live5.1 24bit edition
Visiontek X850XT-PE
Maxtor 60gig IDE drive (primary windows)
Western Digital Raptor 74gig S-ATA (future games storage)

Bios settings:

IDE settings:
Enhanced Mode
S-ATA
S-ATA as raid: NO

-I had PATA+SATA on and I got a disk read error, so I changed it to Sata and windows booted up fine off my IDE drive.-

Promise Controller: Disabled

FSB is overclocked along with the memory timings.

The new drive is seen in “My computer” window, as well in the disk management window. I also formatted the drive in NTSF with a primary partition.

That’s pretty much all I've done up to this point, would appreciate a lending hand here.

Thanks,

Get this and run some tests. See if anything funny comes out of it.

Also try running your computer at stock clock speeds.

Ok cool someone else recommended the same as well. YOu mean FSB only? Or the memory timings as well?

What sort of power supply are you running? Could be that the raptors trying to draw more than the PSU has avaliable, which could crash the system.

Try running at stock speeds. On a lot of systems it OCs not just the CPU but also the PCI and other buses. I know there were some issues with a chipset with OCing and SATA drives but I don't remember which chipset it was.

Sad sad news :(

Upon resetting my computer for the 10th in testing my sata drive, my windows xp has just become corrupted. I went to repair the drive and my installation was errored going to loops. I wes nearly left with the option of formatting the whol IDE drive. At the last minute I just happen to think of my J drive to reinstall my new windows.

With the new installation done on my sata drive, I had luckly my old OS files. On it my 2 gigs of music was saved and my 3gigs of backup programs, Bitsoup movies and games I saved, and some movies as well. Im just glad I didnt loose any of it; silly me should of already burned them to DVD. So far I would like to thank you all for the help with my problem. As for now the new sata is working fine and I've install a ton of games to it, I wonder what the old problem was though, but take care!
