Saudi court sentences 75-year-old woman to lashes

I can't believe people still act like this. traditions suck big time

Well, she was mingling with them.

...next thing you know, women of all ages will be mingling with other men. Where's the honor in that?

This sort of thing can leave a person scarred for life.

We should invade their country; take their oil and kill their leaders.

I read about this a couple of days ago. Apparently women aren't allowed to play music or dance either.

^ Music and dance is banned altogether.

At first I typed the words "I stand corrected," but I was simply too hungry for the truth to yield.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Arabia#Music_and_dance

One of Saudi Arabia's most compelling folk rituals is the Al Ardha, the country's national dance. This sword dance is based on ancient Bedouin traditions: drummers beat out a rhythm and a poet chants verses while sword-carrying men dance shoulder to shoulder. Al-sihba folk music, from the Hejaz, has its origins in al-Andalus. In Mecca, Medina and Jeddah, dance and song incorporate the sound of the mizmar, an oboe-like woodwind instrument in the performance of the mizmar dance. The drum is also an important instrument according to traditional and tribal customs. Samri is a popular traditional form of music and dance in which poetry is sung.

From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29601858/

Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islam prohibits men and women who are not immediate relatives from mingling. It also bars women from driving, and the playing of music, dancing and many movies also are a concern for hard-liners who believe they violate religious and moral values.

EDIT: Upon further research, an NPR interview has discombobulated my initial knowledge.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=98138992:

The conservative Islamic kingdom of Saudi Arabia is hardly a place where you'd expect to hear about up-and-coming rock bands.....The latest phenomenon, The AccoLade, is one of the country's first all-female rock bands.

The band's look is a mix of skinny jeans, Chuck Taylors, teased hair, piercings and lots of eyeliner, but you won't see much of this in public or on the Internet. Outside the house or the university, the women cover their hair and wear long black robes called abayas.

Still, some conservative Saudis have written to online forums, saying the band is immoral; the women say they've done nothing wrong.

So it seems women performing music overwhelmingly frowned upon, at best.

Saudi Arabia is only underdeveloped in a few ways. Like human rights and justice system.

I'm sure Stern will be here shortly to make his outrage at this incident known.
