An appeal court in Saudi Arabia has doubled the number of lashes and added a jail sentence as punishment for a woman who was gang-raped.

The victim was initially punished for violating laws on segregation of the sexes - she was in an unrelated man's car at the time of the attack.

When she appealed, the judges said she had been attempting to use the media to influence them.

The attackers' sentences - originally of up to five years - were doubled.

This is just sick. Those judges are a couple of moronic zealots. Religion ftl

Ugh. I hear stuff like this and I just can't help but get the impression that some countries are actually still living in the middle ages. Barbaric.

And people wonder why I refuse to go to the middile east for holiday.

That's pretty ****ed up right thur. Yet they are our best buddies because their people are so easy to exploit. Not to mention all that oil.

way to generalise an entire region

This is a regular occurrence in the Middle East. Except in Saudi Arabia's case, where it's practiced by the government so the family or relatives don't have to bother. And Iran... Oh boy, let's just say they're "hanging" in there.

Yeah too bad I wasn't born some hundred years later when all the oil is gone, then we'd be having some real fun. In all seriousness though, they still cut the hands of thieves so this isn't really surprising.

oh my god. Prosecuting a rape victim. I have read up alot about the atrocious actions of extremist islam, but I have never heard of that before at all in my life.

WHAT THE **** IS THAT, ITS NOT EVEN LOGICAL? HOW CAN YOU PROSECUTE A RAPE VICTIM?

Seven men from the majority Sunni community were found guilty of the rape and sentenced to prison terms ranging from just under a year to five years.

...

The rapists also had their prison terms doubled. But the sentences are still low considering they could have faced the death penalty.

Good

The victim's lawyer was suspended from the case, has had his licence to work confiscated, and faces a disciplinary session.

Wonder what kind of "media influencing" the defendants used. Could shed some light on this atrocity.

Disgusting, just another act of oppresion and stupidty from our good friends in Arabia.

The amusing thing is that the people there want these laws. They would riot if the laws weren't so Islamic.

This is as awesome as that Nigerian woman was stoned to death for getting raped.

SOME OF THESE ISLAMIC CULTURES ARE ****ING ABSOLUTELY RETARDED

Just in case anyone is wondering this is why this doesn't bother us. They can do whatever they want as long as they stay our puppets:

Saudi Arabia Won't Include U.S. Dollar in OPEC Talks

Nov. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter, rejected a proposal by Iran and Venezuela to discuss the weak dollar at this weekend's OPEC summit in Riyadh, saying it didn't want the U.S. currency to ``collapse.''

Saudi Arabia won't discuss pricing oil in currencies other than the dollar, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal said, speaking at a meeting of oil and finance ministers today that was accidentally broadcast to journalists.

In 2000 Saddam priced his oil in something other than the dollar, I think we all know what happened after that.

Update

A lawyer for a gang-rape victim in Saudi Arabia who was sentenced to 200 lashes and six-months in jail says the punishment contravenes Islamic law.

(...)

Abdel Rahman al-Lahem told the BBC Arabic Service that the sentence was in violation of Islamic law:

"My client is the victim of this abhorrent crime. I believe her sentence contravenes the Islamic Sharia law and violates the pertinent international conventions," he said.

"The judicial bodies should have dealt with this girl as the victim rather than the culprit."

The lawyer also said that his client his will appeal against the decision to increase her punishment.

Why aren't there any muslim clerics, in the Arab world or the West, supporting the lawyer? It has been painfully silent on that front. This story has been world news for over a day now, but I have yet to read a commentary by or interview with an imam or mullah.

Yeah, for supposedly being the majority of Islam, the moderates have got to be the quietest majority in human history.

I wouldn't call them moderates. Muslims who are moderates probably support these laws. Only very liberal Muslims are against what happened here.

Yes i do want oil to reach $300 a barrel.

Unless civilisation is faced with a terrible crisis we will never create an economically viable energy source or the secret economically viable energy source we have hidden under coroporate power will never get released!!!@@1111

Yes. Because anytime something like this happens every single muslim must condamn it.

Every religion has its extremists. Here in the Netherlands for example there is a rightwing Christian party that has a couple of members that want to ban gays from joining them. When that news came out, a lot of Christians here openly condemned that point of view. That is what I am missing with the gangrape case that is the subject of this thread: outright condemnation of the travesty that is the Saudi (or rather: wahhabi / salafistic) interpretation of the Shari'a.

And like others have already said in this thread: if Islam is a religion of peace, why are there entire muslim countries - Saudi Arabia and Iran being the most obvious examples but they're certainly not the only ones - that totally disprove that point? They execute gays, have laws that diminish women rights, make it impossible for the faithful of other religions to practise their rites, etc etc. Where is the peacefulness in that?

And, no, I m not saying that all muslims think like the Saudi zealots. Especially here in the west there is a big group of liberal muslims that practice Islam in a way that is totally acceptable. I just wish that this group would act against the hijacking of their religion by a large bunch of extremists that seem to be bound on turning back the clock a couple of hundred years.

In short, I think it's time that Islam (just like Christianism and Judaism before it) goes through a period of Enlightenment. Clerics have no place in politics and religious beliefs shouldn't be made law. Religion can be a great guiding light for some people, but it should be a personal thing. Practise it within the confines of your home or your religious building, but don't bother other people with it.

So what? Do you know which bits of the middle east practice this kind of law and which don't? I'm not taking the ****ing risk of getting bits cut off because I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time/wrong cloths/ wrong religion, whatever.

And just so you know, my GF grew up in the middle east, and wants me to go, so I have actually thought about this.

I have come to the conclusion, to anyone that asks me why I refuse to go - **** you, I'm not going and you can't make me, if you don't like it swivle.

Stupid bitch, that what happens when you go and get yourself raped like that. Hope she learned a lesson - don't live in that ****hole.

Update

The Saudi Justice department has defended the lashing and incarceration of the woman. According to Reuters the department thinks the punishment is just, because the charges against the woman have been proven. To remind you of those charges: the woman had contact with another man without a male chaperone. She has been subsequently raped by this dude and 6 others, but that is no reason for leniency.

These people are savages. May they burn in hell.

The thing that worries me the most isn't the law, but that the people who uphold that law actually believe, with all conviction, that it is the right thing to do.

So she's a stupid bitch because she lives in Saudi Arabia? I suppose she should just magic herself to another country like the good old USA for example? Maybe to a fancy apartment in New York (just like in friends). I hate to shatter the fragile bubble of your dream world, but I think you'll find a great many people in the world (probably 95% in fact) don't really have any choice about where, or under what conditions they live, and aren't in a position either financially, socially or politically to be able to do anything about it. Yes she may live in a land of people whose laws maybe backward, but that doesn't necessarily make her a stupid bitch, drawing that conclusion does kind of make you one though.

Psst...I think he was joking. ;)

:D lol
I suppose there's enough twisted opinions on this forum to mistake it as serious though.

I have just read this myself and totally agree with you.

Guilty for for being alone with an unrelated man!!

Yegods! Primitive savages. Make yourselves extinct or evolve..PLEASE!

I do not agree with Iran's law and customs but we must respect and accept cultural differences. If our tolerance of other countries laws waver we are in serious trouble of going on a crusade no body will win. We can only hope that Iran, given time will evolve into a mature state and hopefully separate politics and religion as we have done in Western Europe.

What does Iran have to do with anything?

we must respect and accept cultural differences.
If that means the death and torture of rape victims? Fuck no!

I fail to see why we should respect barbarism.

And that's exactly what it is.

They're not even real barbarians either.

They don't even eat roast boars or drink barrels of mead before fist fighting in an orgy of blood.

What a farce.
