Money for distribution of relief running dangerously low, U.N. says

Wednesday, November 2, 2005; Posted: 11:25 p.m. EST (04:25 GMT)

CHHUMBER, Pakistan-controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- Dozens of villages containing hundreds of thousands of people have received little or no aid nearly four weeks after a devastating earthquake hit Pakistan and India.

An estimated 3.3 million people remain homeless as winter approaches in the mountainous Kashmir region, raising fears of an even worse humanitarian disaster to come. <snip>

"My future is black," one woman said. "I lost my husband, I have no home, no blankets, no tent and the snow is coming."

Another woman had had two of her children die but she cannot afford to think too much of them. Her concern now is for her baby and her young boy who has a broken arm that needs attention.<snip>

These people need shelter, heat, clothing, blankets, food, water, medical aid -- shelter being the most critical need; they need tents.

The relief orgs need money yesterday to supply these things (send money, not things).

Sick, wounded, infant, old, pregnant, hungry, thirsty people won't fare very well when totally exposed to the searing harshness of an Himalayan winter. I can't imagine many worse ways to die.

Winter's fast closing in now. It snowed there last night, but the snow didn't stick. When the snow does stick, it will be clinging to corpses that used to be mountain people. The question is, how many folks can we keep this from happening to.

These bitterly suffering members of our human family Need Us RIGHT NOW!

Please post this list on every board you are a part of, these people need your help now.

I know this sounds harsh but if we gave money out every time somewhere poor is hit by a natural disaster we'd be broke. The only reason that tsunami got so much coverage was because it was a tourist resort for rich westerns.

These are ****ing people that are about to freeze to death, man, woman, children, elderly, people just like you and me. What is wrong with you?

I'll be donating. Even though I am a student, I can spare some money for those less fortunate :)

Good to hear. I will try to donate as much as I can from each pay check for the following month or 2. I am still trying to figure out the best charity to give to. As soon as I know I will post it here.

Edit:

Just heard good things about oxfam:

Biggest. Lie. EVAR.

Broke eh......funny funny stuff.

I'm tempted to do some aid work at some point.
Rather than just wasting my energy lifting weights i may as well help people.
I'd rather help out personally than just give money.

I think you should go to sudan and single handidly protect 200 people from an army of evil people!

Go short recoil!

I have donated a pound here and there, but I'll do more!
