save games lost!

sicne my steam updated my hl2 yesterday, my game saves are all gone!

i hadnt yet finished the game, so I had hoped to just continue from where I left off... but when is tart up now, there are no old game saves to load up!!!

anyone else? since this could be a problem for me again if steam ever updates hl2 again, can anyone tell me how to make backups of my games saves? what are the file extensions and what needs to be copied ?

You can just copy the files in the "SAVE" folder if you want to make back-ups. I've swapped them in and out and with other people with no problems.

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[your username]\half-life 2\hl2\SAVE

You can use map cheat codes to get back to where you were faster if you want.

You bring up the console by pressing the key to the top left of your keyboard, next to 1. If that doesn't work go to Options-->Keyboard-->Advanced and tick Enable Developer Console, then try it again.

The you just type in "map" and the level code and off you go. The first level would "map d1_trainstation_01" and so on.

Here are the codes for the full game, guess you've got to work out where you are from that. Top of the list is the start of the game through to the end of the game at the bottom:
