scalable textures?y/n?

Ok so for making my own custom textures,
I realize the maximum size in source is 2048x2048 currently
thats large enough i would say

but what about those w/ lower end vid cards

do i need to create low res versions of my textures
or will the source engine do this itself realtime?

say 1024x1024 for the high res
and 256x256 for the low res?
( or 512x512 )

im hoping its automatic
but if anyone can confirm this
pls reply here

The engine will scale the textures down, though proably not realtime. It will probably be like HL1 with sub-mips etc.
