Hey guys. I'm not very familiar with scanners, and really could use some help. Ideally I'd like to be able to have the scanner be on at nearly all times, and not bound to any one particular computer.

Is there a way to take a typical home scanner and set it up on a home network so that the scanner itself is a separate entity on that network and can communicate requests and process them, ultimately sending back the scanning data to the computers that call for it?

I don't want to have to turn one of the computers on in the back room just to get the scanner functioning and have to use the software on that computer to do all the work, and send it back to my computer. I'd rather just be able to walk into the room, put something on the scanner, walk back into my room and press the scan button in my software and have it sent via my cat6 to my computer.

Not possible?

Or even if I have the computer that it's plugged into, is it possible to have this communication?

what brand scanner?
every scanner/printer has been plugged into a single computer, had the proper installation disk uploaded to the same computer
but,if you have a primary computer that feeds the internet through a wireless HUD or a router, then its probably not possible
in other words
individual computer=individual scanner

I don't know the brand of scanner. I can go look, but can't be arsed right now, unless it's actually important.

My computers are all on a network I maintain that consists of two routers that feed into a FIOS modem.

One of the routers is stacked onto the main one so we can support seven connections in the house. Which is good because after rewiring the house, we ran cat 6 cables and have one ethernet outlet in each room of the house. And of course any extra computers can go in the router room if need be, but that's the master bedroom.

if you hook the scanner up to your primary pc,it should work with every PC,but,if installed in a secondary, then it should work with just that one

I don't have a primary PC. That's not how my network works.

Oh well.

isn't you computer that all the routers are hooked up to your primary?

My router's aren't hooked up to any of my computers. My computers are hooked up to my routers. The routers are hooked up to each other, and the main router is hooked up to the FIOS modem, which is hooked up to the outside world.

It's all a series of tubes really.
