Ok, now what I mean by this is what was the scariest, most off-putting, type of fright that you had in Doom 3? What was the single-most scariest part that freaked you out the most? Details, place, what happened, why it scared you, what you did after (eg, lost control of bowels, quit the game, acidentally shot 30 plasma cells off, etc).

There are several different options, I'll explain them here:

- Monster scare, jumping out of dark area/door/wall, or imps jumping onto windows
- Paranormal activity scare, corpses, skeletons or items flying around the room in unexpected fashions
- Possession scare, when the screen goes red and you get a vision of some sort (eg, bathroom mirror)
- Darkness scare, when the lights go out suddenly, or a monster is suddenly revealed from darkness (silhoutte of imp under stairs for example)
- Auditory scare, scary sounds (evil laughter, "over here") or non-monster events happening, eg a metal plate falling off a wall
- Demonic presense scare, several enemies spawning in at once, the "they took my baby" bloody-footprints scene or the "hallway of screaming glyphs" scene (with a pinky, just after chainsaw guys).
- Monster intro movies (pinky, revenant, lost soul etc)
- Hell (any aspect of this level or the last Cyberdemon level)
- Something else (specify)

The scariest parts I remember are when you're crawling through a vent and the skeleton jerks back and forth, and another part when a corpse suddenly flies up the ceiling and falls down. Then you go through the door past it, and it happens again.

I didn't do anything particularly notworthy, but I was a bit spooked and on-edge and hesitated before going further into the game, expecting something else to happen too.

Hard to say, there were lots of good scares, the mirror probably got me the most. I'd missed it the first time round and someone mentioned how scary the mirror was. I just thought they meant how creepy it looks when you face a mirror and there's the darkness behind. So didn't expect the actual mirror scene when it happened. I thought that was great :E

I didn't even know about the mirror scene until people told me about it, and then I went to go check it out, and it scared the shit out of me, so I voted for that one

I didn't actually get scared by the mirror at all. I don't think I was quite paying full attention - I didn't realise that your face was aging etc. Oh well. I watched it again in a gameplay movie someone linked to, and I was still pretty underwhelmed. Same with that "they took my baby" scene everyone is raving about.

what about the little girl's voice and the footsteps in blood? Or when she tries trick you into getting too close to the edge of an elevator shaft

Yeah, the footsteps is the "they took my baby" scene I mentioned.

When does she trick you into getting too close to an elevator shaft?

hwo about that bit where your walking down the stairs (near the beginning) and there are two big crates and as you get down there a guy says "hey What you talkin' bout willis?"

*shivers*

I haven't personally seen the footsteps themselves yet, just heard about them heh

Deltalabs "I think" that and the time she leads you the wrong way makes me think she's perhaps not on your side heh /me states the obvious :D

i love this game just for the scares :D . thats the only thing keeping me at DOOM3 is how god damn scary it is....ive never played a game so ****ed up before.

So hard to choose so I'll refuse to participate in the poll.

There are so many different scares and many of them are equally good.
Some of those who really drive me nuts are:

When there's a zombie behind a door or a wall, mumbling and mumbling, you can't go in there and kill him because the doors locked, so he keeps mumbling and you don't know what he's doing, he's just in there, that damn mumbling and no matter how far away you go you still seem to hear it. Scares the shit out of me :(

The toilet. Everything that's connected to the toilet is probably part of the most scariest things in the game. When you turn "evil" in the mirror, when you walk to the toilet furthest away which is completely dark and you hear.. stuff.. behind the walls or beneath or above or somewhere distant, that creeps me so much I always run away from there. :(
Or after the red-scene when you walk past the toilet and it suddenly flushes, that made me jump out of the chair, haha! :D

Other freaky things are in complete darkness.. It drives me insane. You know there's something there but you don't know where and you don't know when it'll come and rip your head off.

The evil laughter always make my underwear dirty aswell.

The sequence when you hear that voice whispering "over here" and saying "they took my baby", and you hear these weird cackling sounds and stuff really freaked me out like shit aswell.

Or before you meet the "man-spiders", that was pretty scary since you crawled through shitloads of net and stuff, I tried to advance as slowly as possible, I was really shitscared because I had no idea when exactly they'd strike. :D

Seriously, I love this game so much because of this.. I don't think any game has kept me this scared and immersed before.

One thing that don't really scare me though is the "spooky-vision " sequences, when stuff fly around and your vision turns red and you can't walk, I just wait for it to pass over and it's one of those things that completely removes all the immersion.

The mirror scene got my heart racing but since then........nothing, just the occasional jumping due to Lost Souls and not being able to kill them

I don't know about you guys, but I found one of the scariest parts of this game was when they would talk on those computers, or pdas about containing people in cells and stuff because they went insane, and mutilation, and then you would see them banging on the glass...it made you think about what was going on and just...made you feel like you were there.

I think the audio stuff is the best... like "over here" when you get the plasma gun... zee baby sounds... and I'm pretty sure right before I quit last night, I heard a woman recite part of the 'Our Father' prayer...

Yea I specificly remember "Deliver us from evil"

mostly just stuff I don't expect, which has been two things so far. the rest falls under 'tension'

Gotta be the Imps, I don't know how many times I've ****ing jumped out of my chair because I opened a door or rounded a corner and an Imp was crouched down, waiting to pounce...

That, or the zombies in the cells... the fat one banging his head on the door is damn disturbing.

These 3 scared me the most.

Demonic presense scare
Darkness scare
Monster scare

This game is BORING! I have been walking around trying to find the zombies, but there are just regular people everywhere talking about their jobs as construction workers. Argh...

?!?!?!

You mean you've only played five minutes of it and you're already complaining about it being boring? Besides, I thought them introducing you to the game like that was one of the best parts of the game.

Get this man some Riddlin

Wait, Man? No, you must be 10 years old.

When I saw that fat zombie banging his head against the glass I started to laugh; I thought it was rather funny (it was a nice break from the incredibly tense atmosphere of the game). For me however (and I should mention I'm not yet finished) the scariest happenings were as follows:

1) The escort mission which has you leading the scientist through the pitch black corridors. The way it ends (I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't yet seen it) was really perfect.

2) The skeleton in the vent shaft followed by the very demonic voice speaking in Aramaic (I think). That was fantastic.

The game has many, many jump moments which are too numerous to list. The thing that really does it for me though is the way the whole game has this overwhelming sense of dread and despair which never really lets up. I never feel safe to stop, take a breather, and read someones PDA, or watch one of those UAC promo videos, or reload, or do anything at all really. I'm on my toes all the time, and it's fantastic.

I think a close contender for the scariest moment could also be the #666 storage locker in one of the delta labs - incredibly scary if you don't know what to expect.

Oh god yes :p That was a horrible trick to play on my already shattered mind :)

Why have I managed to entirely fail to see that bit? *cries*

I got the hell scared outta me whilst operating the crane to clear the toxic barrels from a room, halfway through I hear footsteps and the door opens behind me with grunts coming through :| You just don't expect to be interrupted when you're doing tasks like crane driving and scanning through PDAs, they hit you when you least expect it.

I also got freaked out when it all went black and bodies started floating around the room, with those demonic voices. I think ID sold themselves to the devil to get this game done.

You probably went to the bio labs first and removed the lockdown on the operations door before actually going there first and realising you needed to remove the lock in the first place - that's when you see them in their cells, but if you've already removed the lock they can escape and you'll just find them in the hallways when you return.

ahhhhhh! that must be it.. cool :D

Is there a site or something with all the scary bits written down? Like I think I missed the little girls's voice, footsteps in blood, elavator shaft etc...

The part that gets me the most is when I'm walking and then the screen goes red and bodies start to float and get dragged around :( The first time I saw it I unloaded my entire clip at nothing :(

I voted for sound scare. The sounds in this game truly are an amazing piece of work and have made me either quit the game or pressed esc and gone for a cig break to cool off many times.

Like when you trigger the lights going out in one part and just after theres the "MUHAHAHAHA!".

Overall the entire game is scary as hell and without all of it put together the game would be nothing but i think the sound is what really puts the icing on the cake. I dont particually like the demonic control where your screen goes red and shit, that gets me everytime without fail. The thing that makes me jump the most is the imps (upto now), there is one part where the your screen goes red and then you walk through a door and an imp jumps right at you from the side of you...good god man i nearly died at that point. I swear this game isnt healthy.
