what's the last game that's really scared you?

i was playing deus ex for the first time about five minutes ago but i got scared because that game scares the crap out of me, i mean the atmosphere combined with really really loud alarms gets to you and you just have to take a breather sometimes, and before deus ex i'd have to say hl1 for i remember putting that game down a few times at very very tense moments (head crabs in the ventilation shafts anyone?)

and i like being scared, makes the game addictive and i hope doom3 really is as scary as it makes itself out to be, and i also hope that hl2 retains the tense moments of hl1.

far cry scared me when the mosters were let loose in that one level ...bastards killed me a number of times by sneaking up behind me

I dont know if I'll be able to play doom with the lights off ...cant see the keyboard all that well ...ya

geez it was ages ago... but I think
Clive Barker's Undying, got me a couple times (was more an awesome game than scary though)
and
Aliens VS Predator 2, that one got me good at night sometimes.. it was more tense than scary though...

Im still waiting on a decent horror fps to scare me shitless.
I HOPE Doom3 does it...

if not... perhaps F.E.A.R. will

System Shock 2 is the only game that really scared me. I nearly fell off my chair at one point.

you know, I never played that.. my comp at the time couldnt run it.. so I missed out.

I hear from nearly everyone that it ruled... however I cant really play it having the high expectations I do now... for modern day games and all.
(I did download the demo and try it though.. couldnt get into it)

I understand that. SS2 was definately a game for its time.

Silent Hill 1/2/3 ;(

HAHAHA LMAO!!! HAHAH You get scared of those???!! HAHAHHA!!!!!.............oh wait....................was that silent hill??? (Shivers) :( j/k ;)

Anyway.. the silent hill games are the scariest games ever made imo. Especially the first one. When I played it the first time and got to the evil elementray school...I shut it off because I could not handle it. I've never seen a game like that before. Most people say that silent hill 2 had the best story of the series and I agree...but Silent hill 3 was very scary and had an ok story to it. Now all we gotta do is wait for Silent hill 4. Have you guys seen the trailer for this one?? I CAN'T WAIT!!

Resident Evil

When I first played Resident Evil, I was only 10 years old, and I got scared out of my mind. The first time you encounter a zombie it plays a cutscene where a zombie is crouched over a body, and it slowly turns and looks at you and you can see it's mangled face. It scared the shit out of me (hey, I was only 10 years old)

never played the silent hill series (other than SH2 and I wasnt really impressed.. seemed like a dumbed down RE.. IM not say it is, just I never got into it)

I LOVE the Silent HIll4: the room, theme song :D

"you lie silently before me
your tears they mean nothing to me
the wind howling at the window
the love you never gave, I give to you
really dont deserve it
but now
theres nothing you can do
so sleep
in your only memory
of me...
my dearest mother

heres a lullaby to close your eyes
goodbye
it was always you that I despised
I dont feel enough for you to cry
heres a lullaby to close your eyes
goodbye
goodbye
goodbye....."

hehe got the trailer saved to disk :D just for that song

System Shock 2 and Aliens vs Predator 1. Sai - scared of loud alarms. Be gentle with him. ;o

The suffering is starting to scare me into killing someone
/me grabs a knife!!!

AvP1 marine missions scared the crap out of me

AvP2 marine (again) really got to me

Morrowind, only a little fright during the nights if something appears from the dark, but not so much

Undying, good game, didn't scare me too much, but i thought it was pretty cool all the same

They Hunger, a few frights in that

HL1 Uplink, first ever time I played it and a headcrab appeared out of the dark and jumped at me, that got a fright

Aliens(UK version) on the C64, scared me so much I didn't use the computer for a week

Aliens(US) not as scary, but had its moments

Daggerfall, a few spooky moments during dungeon crawls

Trespasser had its moments in a more adrenalyn type scare.

System Shock 2, would scare me when I played it on a slow machine, lost its scare factor on a machine that ran it nicely.

Thief, had its moments, again a bit like Trespasser, more a rush than outright fear.

Far Cry's A.I was kicka*s. I remember a few times i was in the vents and these trigens jumped inside the vents.

The original doom was a little freaky.

Halo the part with all those little head mushroom things lol.

If anyone remembers a game called The Wheel of Time, there was this one part where you were in The Ways, and out of the darkness comes this huge cloud. I think it was called the Black Wind, anyway, it suddenly appeared this huge cloud flying towards you, screaming. Holy shit I crapped my pants when I saw this huge screaming mass coming at me!

I've just started back up playing doom2 and its just a pretty constant stream of scare the crap outta me.

best enemy sounds ever. (as far as scariness goes)

Chronicles of Riddick, but only the one part when ur in the pit, and those gollum freaks are running after you. I ran into a dead-end, turned around, and 4 of them were right next to me. Scared the shit out of me.

Silent Hill 2 was the last game that really gave me chills. I'm playing through the Resident Evil remake on the GameCube, and while it doesn't match Silent Hill 2, it's still pretty spooky sometimes. Here's to hoping Doom 3 scares the living crap out of me.

Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil Code Veronica caught me by surprise a couple times, but I wouldnt say they scared me.

although I did almost shit myself the first time I played "alone in the dark" the first survival horror game I ever played (this was back in the day though)

No game has properly scared me...maybe resident evil 2 (the first horror game I had ever played) - but then I was like 10 or 11 I think.

The Trigens in Far cry were the closest of getting me scared, after RE2.

Hopefully, Doom 3 is about to change this list...

Hm probably silent hill 1 and 2, havent played any that have scared me since then. I remember playing RE constantly, my friend was scared shitless but I never got scared for some reason..not enough tension i guess.

I find that the environment you play in affects your mood while playing a game. So, for example, if you're playing a scary game, and a few others are in the room with the window open listening to music, you're not going to get scared. However, if you play it alone at night, with the curtains drawn, all distractions gone, then it gets scarier. Perhaps those who don't get scared by video games easily should consider re-evaluating the environment they're playing games in.

I whole heartedly agree with you Kage.
for Doom3 Im barricading myself in my room with all the lights out, dead silence, headphones (I dont have a 5.1 setup on my comp, and I cant be arsed to play in the living room) no one else around me.... and only at night.

I WANT this game to scare me so bad.
as I said only game that ever gave me that "holy shit" feeling was "Alone in the Dark" and I played that when I was like 13 or something... still I loved it.

Resident Evil as I was 11. I wont be playing Doom 3 as I dont like scary games, I really hope that HL2 wont be THAT scary.

The original Doon scared the crap out of me, now is only a bunch of pixels.
Oh yeah, Marathon for MAc did scare me also, what a great game.

The Trigens were sh*t; the human ones specifically. The monkey ones with no real face were good though. And yes they could be scary.

The game that freaked me out the most was The Thing which was surprisingly good and, I think, much maligned <Sighs> The tense atmosphere caused by the paranoia of both yourself and that of the AI characters was fantastic and really jumpy many many times.
However I find most things set in the Antarctic scary - the levels set there in NOLF2 were. And, embarassingly, so were the Antartic levels from Tomb Raider 3 (piss off, it was a long time ago - I was young and impressionable)

Fatal frame (or proyect zero) is one of the most scary
in Fatal frame you are a litle in a japanese mansion full of gosht
but if the gosht are not enough to scare you the ambientation will scare the shit of you
just imagine be in a very old house and heard scary and loud sounds all around and see something walking over there

the scary japanese games are more scary than the americans
but are americans games that also scare
for example Alone in the Dark is very scary

original silent hill was by far the scariest game i played...i played it when it was first released at me mates house and took a copy of it home and played it on an emulator cos i didnt have a ps at the time....never had i been so disturbed by a gaming experience...and scared

silent hill 2...AMAZING story...some nasty rape scenes...didn't really scare me that much until i got to the prison level

silent hill 3.....very twisted and disturbing...anyone whos played it will know what i mean when i say 'mirror room'

undying....found that very scary the first time i played aswell....specially everytime i heard the noise those weird thingies that appear from nowhere make....id just get the chills everytime i heard that

i haven't finished undying cause it's so scary. i remember playing the demo. i look in the mirror and in the mirror appears someone behind me floating. i turn around and nothing is there. ooooooohhhh. that really freaked me out. also there are some jumping creatures in there that scare me. Really any games with creatures that jump at you scare me, e.g. farcry trigens. heck even quake was scary at times all alone in the dark with the sound cranked up.

The last game i played that truly scared me to the point of just exiting the game was FarCry...it had a very tense atmosphere i think. The massive trigens was'nt scary at all, they was a flop (Fat Boy's) but the fast little ones...sheesh, everytime i saw one i knew it was gunna make me jump at least a little bit.

There is one bit where you are above quite a few if you go the right way and they are jumping up, or trying to but id done this bit before and they never managed to hit me but this time one did...it slashed my damn eyes and i nearly fell of my chair hehe.

The scariest game ive played though is the 2 year old alpha of Doom3, ive never been so terified in all my life of a game, it could make a statue jump, it makes FarCry feel like The Sims ;). Id say this is the most scary game but as i have'nt got the retail version yet so i wont but im 99.9% certain it will be even scarier.

far cry scared me when the mosters were let loose in that one level ...bastards killed me a number of times by sneaking up behind me

Too bloody right. Just the little fast ones, but they coudl be frighteningly smart. Might have been just co-incedence but I remember on that level I was sneaking towards a Trigen, M4 in hand, throught he thick jungle when suddenly I hear that heavy bretahing sound right behidn me. I turn round, veyr slowly. "Clever girl," I say, before being rippd to shreds.

When I first played HL I found it scary as hell but then my monitor was awful and even on full brightness It was horribly dark. As in pitch-black dark for quite a lot of the game. OPnly a flashlight for illumination. Plus I was young.

Mustn't forget SS2! I love that old game.

I'll be original & say REmake (Resident Evil for GC). I'm always afraid of dying in that game for some reason. Also, Dancing Stage can be a little scary sometimes too :) Especially character designs & the bloody difficulty level...

When I was like 11 years old, Diablo. I wouldn't even play that game if there wasn't anyone else in the room. It's not all in your face stuff like a FPS but the sounds and everything in the background. Maybe it wouldn't scare me now but it definitely did years ago.
