Only reason I can find why the names are different was purely to differentiate different sports. In the US I guess "soccer" wasn't really known until after American "football" had been named and been popularized. So naturally they had to find a different name once it became popular.

Apparently its also called "association football" in some places.

As for the soccer thing: Soccer is an abbreviation of Association Football. It's called Association Football as opposed to Rugby Football. Back in the day, people in Oxbridge used to abbreviation things and add 'er' to the end. Breakfast would be brekker. Rugby Football would be rugger and Association Football would be Soccer. That's where it comes from.

But yeah, if Sven doesn't get a decent formation England won't go far at all next year in Germany. He needs to drop Beck's as captain, and get Rooney in the centre with Owen.

Next manager for Englan seriously though should be McLaren, or the "Baggies" guy, Allardice also is pretty decent

Alan Curbishley would be a good choice. He's done a good job at Charlton with very little money. Sam Alladyce is good with transfers but that means nothing when it comes to managing international times.
