I recently got a new computer, and blew my budget on a 6800gt, so i ended up getting a cheap monitor- a 17" Samsung Syncmaster CRT. My question is, while it looks ok to me, i am not an experienced gamer (yet- lol) and am not sure if this screen could be holding me back in any way. It's got a max refresh rate of only 65hz.

65hz will most probably induce headaches and possibly cause damage to your eyes after long periods of time. It would be a much better idea to find a quality monitor, something that supports 75/85hz+ refresh rates.

Is there really any noticable difference between 75hz and 85hz?

I would guess not really (not too much to the visible eye). But then again, I'm using a laptop at 60Hz, don't see any flicker, and never get headaches (unless I've been on for 14 hours straight, that is).

yeah if i look away to the side of my monitor, i can see it flickering out of the coner of my eye, can't be good

yea that sucks. i dont settle for anything less than 85hz, it just hurts my eyes. 100hz is preferrable, i can tell the diff between 85 and 100. crt monitors are cheap though, id save and get a good one, your eyes will thank you.

For some reason I don't as much difference with a higher refreshrate in games but for my desktop I don't settle for anything less than 85Hz too.
There is a difference when going from 60Hz to 75/85Hz but you really realize what you have been subject to once you get used to the 75/85Hz and go back to 60Hz.
Ahh my eyes!
/me covers eyes
