lame scriptors wish it was banned but some FPS veteran always comes back and defends them saying all the l33t players use them so they must be ok, forgetting that many the l33t players are l33t as this sanctioned cheating is allowed, yes if I play on 640x480 with everything switched off with no shadows, extra brightness and a nice zoom/shotty bind on 1 key Id whip even more asses than I do. BuT I play the game to the best my PC can handle it, with reasonable fps and use the control set that is in the menus, like wot 99% of people use otherwise is unfair.

Hear Quake 4 is gonna be pretty much locked down in this department ie no disabling shadows etc

btw I was replying to a thread but guess the mod believes scripting is dirty as well, quite right
 
I think alias binds are horrid, but normals binds (i.e. bind 2 "use weapon_shotgun" ) are ok.

Yeah, scripting ****ing sucks. Oh, and I think you'll find that not too many FPS veterans think scripting is ok. (aside from AG and Op4's decentjump script)

There are many scripts which are there just to facilitate things for the player. For example, back in the old days of TFC, I used many scripts for the engineer class. Instead of pressing many keys and going through menus to build a sentry gun, I would just press one button and that was it. In fact, to play as a good engineer you pretty much HAD TO use scripts, in order to quickly detonate a dispenser when an enemy passed by it.

Same thing with a rocket jump script for the soldier class. Of course I can do it manually in a split second, to the point it's not even really a challenge, or require any skill from me. So yeah, I used a rocket jump script to be able to focus on other more important things, for example.

I think that yes, there are some pretty nasty scripts out there, but recently I feel like people are starting some kind of witch hunt or something. Geez, 99% of what you can make with scripts are completly harmless, "inocent" stuff. So what if I use a script that bypasses the annoying menus when I use my mousewheel to cycle through weapons?
 
Personally I use a duck jump script and a voicecom script that toggles between quarter and full volume, but its fun to post scripts that generate threads like these. I also use a bind that uses one key to pull hegrenade, flash bang, and smoke nade in that order.
 
Movement/weapon scripts are gay.

I saw way to many arguments over the years in op4/ag/hldm to give a shit anymore....
 
Depend on the scripts.

Remember the "fast_switch_weapon" ? It doesn't works, so I put a script that enables it, and voila! ;)

But tell me about a "too much powerfull script", please. (I'm not in [ofend mode], I really don't know about one of those scripts :p)

You obviously haven't met silent LJ scripts, quickbow scripts, guassjump scripts etc

yup, they exist (see e.g. www.pro-hl.com) but

a) it won't make a bad player a better player (not even a bit)
b) good players do not use them. Well, apart from quickbow maybe...

and : gaussjump scripts suck badly.. .ever tried one ? :)
 
Never tried a gj script, but I've tried the others and they work.. they're just.. lame :|

And the list of people caught with scripts is long :/

Quickbow scripts are garbage. In the heat of a fast-paced battle, they will misfire 1/2 the time. (I have played HLDM/AG for 4 years and seen this firsthand.)
You have to allow for too long of a setup time. Manually, you can go faster and with practice, almost never misfire. I think so at least. I'm far faster and more accurate than a quickbow script.
 
theres nothing wrong with most of it. i like screwing with every command in the console, i love binding each weapon... thats all good. but if you have a script that changes something like the speed that your weapons switch, thats a cheat.

and if this is the case for q4 im going to be dissapointed. my q3 cfg was so sweet :)
 
Eh, no, I've never used a quickbow script...

afi133 I barely use quickbow, it's not a big part of my game..

and Gdawg, this isn't about binding, this about certain alias binds that do cheaty things like zooms :)

I do miss not being able to change fov though ;(
 
Scripting destroyed HLDM, if Valve isnt careful, it will destroy HL2DM as well.

Scripts are for ppl who are too retarded to pull stuff off manually - nuff said.

I'm glad most of the posters here are like minded. It was some kind of zoom bound with shotgun & magnum that was posted and thankfully the admin removed.

Silent LJ script? I didn't know that existed. I was pretty good at it without a script to help me.

Back years ago, before I knew all the stuff you could do with the tau for movement, I tried the gauss jump script. That thing really limits you.
 
Can someone explain what the gaussjump does? i.e. go through what it does when you activate it. I am intrigued to see how lame it is.
 
Changes to the tau cannon, charges up, looks behind you, and fires.

It destroyed? More like people moved onto Counter-Strike. Its not hard to find configs yourself, you just have to make sure you know what script they have, and its pretty easy to get away from the crossbow script.

Oh I am too retarded...Hmmmm just because I will beat you with my binds I am too retarded?? Yeah....okay pal.
 
I never used scripts, I don't even use keybinds anymore (used them in Q3 for short while, but thought the hassle wasnt worth it). I dont need any stuff like that in MP, not that i'm good or anything, I simply don't care if I win, I don't play games to defend my life, its a friggin game for gods sake. its for fun, not to outlet some bad language to the next person you see online in a DM game because he is new.

Yeah the only script I use is the lj script...so I don't see why all you newbs complain about scripts, everyone was able to use all of them, some just choose not too, not my fault people can't bind weapons either, or learn.

iv tried all the scripts that do things u can do manually and have to say they all suck

some 1 already mentioned the xbow 1 being so slow and missfiring.

gaussjump is crap becuass u can only jump to the same hight every time u use it, where as manually its much more versatile.

silent lj? rofl, so easy to perform just tap backwards before u land, simple
 
out of everyone here, I agree with disturbed [amazing ;)] and sonic... 'cept about the quickbow because I've seen a few nasty ones.

scripting didn't destroy hldm, cs came along and it's hella easy to pickup and pwn in, whereas if someone were to pickup hldm now and try to play, they'd get unmercifully slaughtered.

the people who decided if a game lives or dies are they people who play the game. I personally loved hldm / ag / op4, so whenever I was tearing up a server with no obvious competition, before I would go on to one more challenging, I'd say something along the lines of "anyone wanna get better? I'm willing to teach this game.." through that I met a decent amount of cool people, some of which still play today, one of which ended up getting better than me (bap.. ya ****er ;)).

I can show you, but then you can always claim it's a script anyway...it's pointless.

I've seen it used at a lan... didn't bother me when I lost to the guy :p.
