so from what I here it some news is floating around about an ask release, could very well be bull... but im curious because several sources stated that the sdk might be out sometime around E3

comments/answers/questions

:smoking:

If by 'news' you mean HLRadio asking Gabe 'When will the SDK come out?' and Gabe saying "The full SDK probably won't come out before the game, but we'll release HLMV beforehand"... I think that's all the 'news' we've gotten so far.

i heard that too, that it would be out around E3 time, i was looking forward to that...........

According to the brilliant Half-Life Radio interview, the full SDK (source code, sample models, hammer) isn't going to be released before the game because of spoiler reasons. There will be tools for the modeler to view their models running in Source.

A bit disappointing, but then again, Valve is right, an SDK with all entities of the game listed will spoil more than the stolen build could ever hope to achieve. And hopefully this indicates that it's redundant and not worth the risk of spoiling the game to release the SDK prior to HL2 because the game is coming out soon enough anyway.

Buy errr... couldn't they just release faceposer?

From the HLRadio interview:

"shortly after E3"...."Small runtime version allowing modelers/animators to view their work in source"

2nd quote isn't exact.

well im dissapointed, but life is life... imo if you dont want spolers

dont read them damnit

And how exactly do you wish to avoid spoilers that will be all over the net? And on top of that, it's perfectly legal to discuss it anywhere.

To my knowledge, a full SDK has never been released prior to a game, and certainly not prior to such a huge title as this one.

There wouldn't be much of a point to releaseing the full SDK before them game. I mean, if you don't have the game, it's not as if you can test any changes you make to the code anyway. It would be useless and serve as nothing but one huge spoiler.

According to 'Half-Life Radio?'

No... it is according to Gabe Newell.

Well obviously, since he was the one being interviewed.... :dork:

Would Hammer work without the game? But then again, all you can do in Hammer is make the level geometry, not the texturing (cause you don't have the textures) and for the props in the levels you don't need Hammer but the already available XSI.

So yeah, I think it's indeed useless. But Faceposer would be useful, but it's not out of the question that it's infact the tool for modelers Gabe spoke of.

Hammer would work without the game, but it has a small runtime engine (like HLMV), so that would/could spoil the HL2 experience for some if it came out before the game.

So, okay: bits of the SDK are going to be released at some point in the future. Start the presses!

looks like E3 will pass without Valve releasing any info that they said they would

What in the last year makes you think Valve would do something that they said they would? Honesty is so, like, last century. Or maybe the one before that. "I didn't lie, little girl. I used marketing strategies!" -- Doug Lombardi channeled through Fragmaster.

That's another reason I didn't let myself get overly hyped about this E3. Developers rarely come through when you want them to. They'll do it when they're damn well good and ready and not a second sooner. After so many E3 dissappointments(like 1999 E3 Game of the Year TF2) I've grown to be indifferent towards shows like E3 and GDC.

i was always hoping for the SDK after release!

why would you want the sdk before release!

1) it will spoil the game
2) you wont get to test play your levels

would be cool if it was installed on the game though like HL1
