The Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue team beats the US Military by FIVE DAYS to New Orleans, 2,200 miles away.

So... why is it that when Louisiana State officials requested help... WE got there first?

Admittedly a 50-person team is faster mobilized than a battalion of National Guard, but we have a 2,200 mile handicap! Yet, we were still the only SAR team on scene.

I'm not going to point fingers, but SOMEONE has to be held accountable. And although it was a number of factors, piling on top of each other, that made this disaster so devastating, it all boils down to incompetancy at the top. I'll let you decide where the blame should stop, but certainly not at the local level.

We've also launched Operation Unison, a relief effort consisting of 1 Destroyer and 2 Frigates, the HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Toronto, and HMCS Ville de Quebec, respectively. As well, the Canadian Coast Guard Light Icebreaker CCGS Sir William Alexander. Carry supplies and helicopters.

Let's all just hope that FEMA actually allows us to off-load the supplies and help.

We all already know that America completely ****ed up and none of us citizens is in the least bit pleased about it.

Will you be sending any of these?

I'm not sure what you mean... we already have sent them. The Search and Rescue team has already returned home, since the survivability at this point isn't very likely.

The convoy of ships is expected to arrive soon, though they might have been delayed due to a storm in the Atlantic.

edit: ooooh... i missed the link :p

Man, shows you how much our goverment ****ed up this time.

Yeah, it doesn't take long to step on a plane and fly down. What does take long is the local government not doing anything about it and the rest of the country not realizing the extent of the damage until it was too late and then mobilizing mass amounts of troops to come in and help.

BTW, they were dropping supplies when the canadians got there. They only beat the massive ground force that was moved in, and it is easier to ready a small force that can hop on a plane rather than a ground force who moves on transports.

Yes... I believe I said it is much faster to mobilize a small team... but why didn't anyone else around the country send their local disaster response teams? Vancouver is the only canadian city with a volunteer team dedicated to urban search and rescue. Don't tell me that places like New York or Los Angeles have no one they can call upon.

I'm not sure when the firefighters came, but maybe if the firefighters hadn't been given pamphlets instead of their boots, first aid kits, and jaws of life, maybe it some more people could've been saved.

simple answer ...they're canadian ..they're used to humanitarian missions

OCybrManO: ..hehe that pic had to be put together by an american ...I mean who else would think a navy is needed in afghanistan .....a land locked country

Perhaps it has wheels... they just wouldn't visible because they'd be submerged. You never know with those crafty Canadians.

I always thought that was another stab at the Canadians with the whole "Navy" thing. :D

Its obviously an escort for cruisers and landing craft. To help support amphibious operations.

This is a joke and statements are most likely factually incorrect.

Casto has offered 1500 doctors to aid the victims. Do you think that the US can swallod their pride and take it?

I bets no.

Uh, the local government did to stuff about it. The issue is, help was requested at the local level - lots of help - and the 'rest of the country' should have realised the extent of damage right away.

It does just seem ridiculous that the Canadians got there first. :dozey: Good show them, though.

If the commies are so bad, then why are they offering aid?

I'm shocked at this news that the Canadians beat the US with aid support. Granted it was a small team, but we have a smaller population than the US. The US is about 9 times the size of Canada, so 50 Canadian troops is kinda the equivalent of 450 American troops. :p

The whole Katrina situation should have been better than it currently is.

Please tell me you guys are sending the canajin' kilted yaksmen :)
(ps. I love Canada, maple syrup FTW!)

One could argue that Cuba is offering their doctors for the sole purpose of making themselves look good, with maybe a secondary effect of actually doing good for a change.

Personally, I think the US shouldn't pass up a good thing simply because of Castro.

China is also sending a bunch of 747 cargo planes full of tents, blankets, generators, etc.

As for our search and rescue team, they weren't soldiers, the USAR team is composed of...

... 32 search-and-rescue experts, two doctors, 12 paramedics, four search dogs and experts trained in handling hazardous materials and assessing damage...

They're mostly from the police, ambulance, and fire departments, if i'm not mistaken.

The troops are coming with Operation Unison.

Yeah that makes more sense. And I'm sure the expectations were that the US would have already had a full rescue squad acting by the time these guys arrived. :)

Its the Federal Goverment that messed up, the Local Goverment was doing all the work.

The US Gov. also refused all help offered. Atleast, that is what was said in my papers.

You guys do realize FEMA did its best to organize aid organizations to send aid down there but it was turned away because they didn't want people to stay and receive aid but to leave.

Castro also offered a shitload of oil...

I realise that FEMA was woefully unprepared for anything of this magnitude.
