So, every time I see one of those Disney commercials on tv, they mention its out on "Disney" DVD, and "Disney" Blu Ray, and iirc, they used to say "Disney" vhs.
Is there any real point to this? Is the hardware different? Is it just slapping their label on another format?

Blu-Ray discs are considerably larger storage than DVDs (Like 25GB as opposed to 4GB) so the movies on them are allowed to be higher quality. They do need a special player. It's expected that Blu-Ray will replace DVDs like DVD replaced VHS.

WAY TO READ THE POST, YORICK

The hardware is not different. There is no such thing as a Disney Blu-ray player.

Name repetition bro. Keep people familiar with your name by repeating it every chance you get.

This lesson and more, out now on Krynn DVD.

They also have "Disney" 3D cinema screens.

I'm looking forward to adverts for "Iron Man 2 on Disney DVD and Disney Blu-Ray now!"

Oh Christ, I'm not going to enjoy this.

Not even Disney are crazy enough to launch their own proprietary disc format. I suppose in some vague sense there are a stock set of features repeated across Disney discs (in the Blu-Ray years, the menus seem to be standardised. More cynically, they can't re-release classic animation without getting a mouseketeer to orally rape at least one song from the soundtrack), but I don't really see the source for confusion.

OT it seems, but has the adoption rate actually improved for Blu-ray? Personally until I'm forced to buy PC games on Sonys little disc I honestly can't see me making the jump.

I think because of the cost, they aren't being used all that much. I mean, Blu-Ray players still over $100. Closer to 200 or 300 for a good one.

Samon's the only person who has such a hardon for films that he actually buys the Blu-Ray versions of movies.

With digital distribution on the rise as well I can't see blu-ray being the main format any time soon. And to be brutally honest I don't think the difference is that massive. Difference between dvd and vhs was way bigger.

I'd say the leap from dvd to blu-ray is equal to, if not more, than the leap dvd made from vhs. Whether this improvement is appreciable or not comes down to dsiplay, screen size and viewing distance, but the improvement is considerable. I've replaced most of my dvds with blu-ray now and haven't looked back.

Digital Distribution will replace DVD. Blu-Ray will exist for the enthusiasts. Even if Digital Distribution allows full HD content on tap, a physical medium that already got there first will still fill the need for people with big collections, or specific collections of stuff they love, to display those films.
